Earlier in the year, I had the opportunity to visit the islands of Hawaii. There, I flew between Oahu and the Big Island on Aloha airlines.

As usual, we arrived early at the check-in counter of the Aloha airline section of the Honolulu airport. Check-in process was very efficient and within minutes, we had our boarding passes. Having been using UPC Telekabel’s Chello service for the last eleven months and become dependent on it – I work from home, so having an always on connection is a necessity rather than a luxury, I have become very used to Cable Modem access. Imagine my horror when my chunky LAN City modem appeared to have been toasted, and I had to spend a week on a 56kps dial-up connection. However my patience was rewarded when I got given a Motorola SurfBoard 4100E modem to replace the LAN City brick.
As far as cable modems go, this is one of the most unobtrusive. My LAN City Modem had been 6 inches wide a foot long and 2 inches high, with a strange shape due to the requirement of cooling fins on it. And it sure used to get hot. ALOHA FROM HAWAII is the soundtrack CD for the television special Elvis made in January 1973. The show was the first ever music concert broadcast live around the world via satellite, and was watched by an audience of over 1 billion people. The show was a fund-raising benefit to raise money for the Kui Lee Cancer Fund and amazingly the event raised over 3 times the estimate, making $75,000 for the fund. Although this sounds small for an event of this kind in this day and age, in 1973 this was a huge sum, and very surprising.
