Advantages: supurb allrounder Disadvantages: not for the freestylers
...On adrenaline of course! Burton’s Supermodel is one in their range of snowboards that can help deliver you beyond your boundaries of on and off piste snowboarding!
Established in1977 a Jake Burton created ‘Burton Snowboards’ in Londonderry, Vermont, producing the first Burton board, the ‘Backhill’. Since then Burton has established itself as ‘the’ premier snowboard making company and has produced countless boards, and countless champions have ridden with Burton. The Supermodel is a model I picked up two years ago, since then Burton have discontinued production of this board, however if you hunt around you can find them lurking at the back of board racks in some shops. I would especially recommend picking one up second hand provided it’s in good condition.

Advantages: Very, very cheap Disadvantages: Not as tough as other bikes.
...need to be able to tune the gears. I managed all this, although I did need to go onto the internet for instructions for the gear tuning (and I'm thinking about taking it into a bike workshop to get it done properly). Just as an aside, the locks were rubbish and the helmets quite large. I had to get a better lock, which cost me £50 - almost as much as the bike itself!
The bike looks rather snazzy, especially if you are of an age to remember being a BMX Bandit. They're all red and yellow and black, and even the kids on my sink estate seem quite taken with it.
Unfortunately, as we all know, you do pay for what you get and it has to be said that it isn't the best bike I've ever had. It doesn't seem particularly strong and I wouldn't use it for stunts or cross country cycling. And the pedal crank snapped off my bike, and then my friend's bike...

Advantages: It works and it is pleasant to use Disadvantages: Big and heavy
...with the Orbitrek, that big thing that looks like a cross between an exercise bike and a stepper. It was good, very good, but my husband’s dodgy knees made it impractical for him and it wasn’t worth keeping it just for me. After all, if I turned into a supermodel I’d probably trade him in. So out it went and in came the Total Gym.
You know, it would be really helpful if they advertised these things in a normal-sized home, rather than an empty warehouse. “It didn’t look that big on the television” is our normal cry whenever we buy something, but this was worse than usual. The Total Gym is the length of our living room. One advantage was that you don’t need an engineering degree to put it together, it is mostly already assembled.
If you haven’t seen the adverts it will be hard to imagine. It isn’t...

My children adore this simple and very funny book. A Richard and Judy Book club winner for the 5+ age range, the language is aimed at the older end of picture book readers but is actually a fabulous story for any age group. The illustration is bright,... more
