Smart Little Fixer
Review of Topeak Hexus Multi Tool by
fred_redwood
Advantages: Good variety of high quality tools in a compact and lightwieght package
Disadvantages: Tyre levers are average, no ring spanners for older bikes
...Why would you want one?
Multi-tools have been around for almost ever - I have a turn of the century mutli-tool, complete with knives, a hook for doing up bootlaces, and amusingly a spike for removing stones from horses hooves.
The Hexus has a similar design to the ubiquitous swiss army knife, although rather than blades it has allen keys, and screwdrivers. The Hexus is your get out of jail free card when you need to carry out an emergency trail/road side repair.
What does it do?
While it is possible to use this for general maintenance, I generally prefer to use proper tools for this purpose. MInd you, popped in a pocket, I find it handy for tweaking when test riding the bike after an overhaul.
On modern bikes, you will come across 3 types of bolt/screw.
1) allen head - the vast majority of bolts.
2) philips/slot head...

WHADDYA MEAN IT DOESN'T FIT?!?
Review of SKS Chromoplastic Mudguard by
fred_redwood
Advantages: Durable and effective
Disadvantages: Very tricky to fit, poor design, inadequate instructions
...in plastic. They are indeed very flexible, very shiny and do scratch nicely. If you're bothered by this then I would suggest buying the silver ones, as a quick perusal of friends SKS mudguards confirm that they don't show the scratches so easily.
The fittings are advertised as being made from stainless steel. Some of the fittings however are most definitely not made from stainless steel. The allen head bolts are stamped 8.8. For those who don't know, 8.8 denotes the tensile strength of mild steel. Those "stainless bolts" are in fact chrome plated mild steel. Stronger than stainless, but are more likely to rust. The lock nuts looked to be chrome plated steel too. Cost cutting on £28 mudguards? Tut! Tut! SKS
The instructions have been translated directly from the German. The diagrams could be made clearer, and it would be helpful...

Mad Dash 8ft Trampoline
Review of Mad Dash 8ft Trampoline and Enclosure by
gdjones27
Advantages: Good Value, good quality, fairly easy to assemble (apart from top of frame)
Disadvantages: needs at least two people to assemble to of frame
...We bought this trampoline as a birthday present for our daughter, and she absolutely loves it.
It was fairly easy to assemble, but definitely needs at least two people to put it together, as the top of the frame took a bit of brute force to get the last connection in place. Even getting all the springs attached was a doddle. Finally attaching the safety enclosure was also easy, in all it probably took us an hour or so to put it all together. The only problem was there were a couple of bolts supplied that were cross-threaded, and had to get replacements.
All of the hard work was worth it to see the look on our daughter's face when she was able to get on it. And those things are priceless. Very good value indeed.
Even though our daughter is only 2 years, I would thoroughly endorse it as a present for any age....
