Something to catch you whenever you fall...
Review of Black Diamond ATC XP by
hukerjohn
Advantages: Fantastic design - great for beginners
Disadvantages: Can be difficult when using thick or stiff ropes
...There isn't much you can say about things like belay devices, but I do know that when you are just getting into climbing and there is an entire wall covered in strange climbing related objects it would be nice to have someone point you in the right direction.
What is a belay and what is it for? Basically when you climb (99% of the time) you climb with a partner. Your partner is there to catch you when you fall and to do so so he or she needs some sort of device that gives full control of the speed of the rope. The rope is folded over and threaded through the hole in the belay plate, then the loop that has been threaded through is attached to your harness via a screw gate carabiner. The loose end of the rope should be hanging down towards the floor and the end attached to the climber points up.
To stop the rope from moving the loose end...

Rambo Rugs
Review of Rambo Turnout by
honeybeee
Advantages: Light, warm, dont slip, never rub, horses seem to like them and dont try to get them off. Excellent value for money.
Disadvantages: Expensive to buy, although I believe they are extremely cost effective.
...off (which was plastered in mud), I found its lightness a god send. I was able to hang the rug up to dry overnight, without covering myself in mud in the process.
I went out and bought both my horses Rambo rugs over 9 months ago, and both rugs are in petty good condition. They have got the odd small tear from bites over the fences (but thats just part of having a horse...nothing stays 100% forever).
The rugs are simply brilliant, never slipping, and they never leave unsightly rub marks on the horses chests, like others before have. Also, mine both have front fastenings that are made up of a ring and two clips (like a lead rope), which is incredibly quick and easy to do up or undo. In winter there is nothing worse than fumbling around with straps covered in mud, Rambo rugs take a minute to put on, and less to take off, which save you...

Review of the Victorinox Century Swiss Army Knife
Review of Victorinox - Swiss Army Knife by
freelancer1
Advantages: Sharp serrated blade, attractive design.
Disadvantages: None that spring to mind.
...I am a little bit sad. You see, I'm a pen knife anorak...
I have four of the things, and use them for camping trips, jobs around the house and those bizarre tasks that pop up from time to time (ever got a lump of chewing gum stuck to your shoe before a meeting?!?) In short - I KNOW about penknives.
Features of the Victorinox Swiss Army Century Swiss Army Knife
Serrated/Straight blade - this is pulled out from the cover by gripping a little groove on the back of the blade. It is made of stainless steel, so it won't rust, and it "locks" when it is in line with the handle. The blade is 4" long and has about 60% serrated edge and 40% straight edge. It is an incredibly sharp blade that cuts just about anything - string, rope...
