The name of this product is Benevit and it is a horse/pony feed supplement produced by Feedmark which is a company based in Norfolk who have been specialists in equine nutrition since 1979:-

Feedmark
Harleston
Norfolk
IP20 0NY

Tel: 01986 782368
www.feedmark.com (oooh, I have just noticed that the photo of the horse on the homepage looks a lot like my little cherub!)

Benevit is a broad range vitamin and mineral supplement for horses. It comes in tubs:-

2.5kg (50 days supply) £11.50
5kg (100 days supply) £18.95
10kg (200 days supply) £32.95
25kg (500 days supply) £48.50

The above prices include free next day delivery in the UK (mainland).

The supplement is fed according to body weight and is added to hard feed. It is palatable to horses and comes in a handy round container with a handle and the container, once the product is finished, is useful for keeping nik naks in. If you buy this product in bulk it is also environmentally friendly as it comes in a large sack and the contents can be transferred into containers as and when needed.

The supplement contains essential vitamins including vitamins A and D and essential acids plus cod liver oil.

The full ingredients:-

Calcium 5.1%,Phosphorus 1.3%,Magnesium 0.52%,Sodium 1.6%, Iron, Copper, Zinc, Manganese, Selenium, Iodine, Cobalt, Vitamin A, Vitamin D3, Vitamin E, Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, Folic acid, Biotin, Panto. Acid, Choline 1, Vitamin K, Lysine and Threonine.

The product can be fed to horses and ponies who are being fed less than the recommended amount of hard feed, those solely on grass or grass and hay or on restricted grazing, those being fed straight feeds (e.g. barley and oats), horses and ponies on 'box' rest and mares and foals who don't require stud feeds at the full recommended rate. The above may be be missing out on some important vitamins and minerals (referred to as 'micronutrients due to the small amounts required in the diet' according to the website) and Benevit attemps to replace these lost vitamins and minerals which could be lost in the above situations. It claims that these vitamins and minerals are necessary for the body to function normally and they play an important role in the body's metabolic processes (production of energy and healthy tissue for example!). The lack of vitamins and minerals can lead to disease eventually.

A friend at my yard has a horse which started to get coppery coloured spots on his muzzle. The owner ascertained that it could be a case of copper deficiency and so she started feeding this supplement (which includes copper) and the spots have now completely cleared up. I have been feeding Benevit for many years now and the most astounding difference is that made to the horses coat. My horse had a lovely shiny coat which was very silky and easy to brush and his mane was silky and shiny too and really shone and he looked happy and healthy and full of vitality, but then I took him of the product (well, I ran out actually) and his coat started to lose its shiny look and seemed to fade and look dull. I will be putting my horse back in this asap.

When you order from this company, you are entitled to a free equine quarterly magazine (called EQ). This is an interesting read and there are various offers inside and lots of interesting articles. Their helpline is also useful if you want to chat over your horses diet and find the best combination of feeds.

I like this product as it covers every angle as far as nutrienets are concerned and you don't have to feed a number of different products to make sure your horse is getting everything it needs.
