I have 2 horses and they are costly and time consuming though worth it. Feeding in winter increases making the costs increase, as horses need more hard feed (concentrated feed), as well as hay or haylage as the grass is less in winter and not as good therefore providing less nutrients. When feeding horses, it is essential to select the correct food for them. They need to maintain their weight, not be too fat or thin. They need to have the type of food suited to their temperament as some can make the horse too fizzy and even make them dangerous to ride if fed incorrectly. Other feeds may not be enough if the horse has no energy, they may need a bit more in their hard feed.

It is more commonly used to enhance the feed that your horse has to ensure that they receive all of the nutrients that they require. Most horse owners supplement their hard feed with vitamins and oils. Blue Chip is fed with the feed and it contains lots of vitamins and oils, thus eliminating the need to feed these also. Basically it is fed to help efficiency of the digestive system, providing a yeast culture, ensuring the correct acidity and a balanced hind gut.

Blue Chip offers all of the nutrients that the horse requires in its diet. As it is not designed to be fed in large amounts, it is fed alongside hard feed. It may mean that the normal hard feed can be reduced as the gut will work more efficiently. It is a similar theory to prebiotics and probiotics that humans eat, to provide `good bacteria!` As long as the gut is performing correctly and `good bacteria` is being produced, it denotes good health. When fed to horse Blue Chip will make a glossy coat, bright eyes and the horse will be the picture of health. It contains essential oils, soya and linseed and suggests that no other vitamins are necessary.Does it work? # # # # # # # #
When I fed my horse Blue Chip, I thought that she looked in good condition. Her coat was shiney and she was always full of energy (too much if anything). She looked good but she did before I fed it. The difference is, I was feeding more hard feed (I was able to decrease it a little) and I had been feeding vitamins which were no longer required.
One of the things that attracted me to Blue Chip was that it provides all of the vitamins that the horse needs and is non-heating. Lots of event horses and show horses, in fact horses in all disciplines competing successfully are fed Blue Chip. My thoroughbred mare was always very lively, spooky, jumpy and liked bucking. She was an exciting ride but frustrating when we would get to an event and she wouldn`t concentrate. (She has mellowed with age now, she is 15). Blue Chip is suposed calmly provide all the essential nutrients. It did not make any difference to her behaviour, I was hoping it would help calm her, but it didn`t.
She did look good though, but she did on the feed and vitamins that she was on before.
Is it cost effective? # # # # # # # # # #
In a word, NO.
Certainly not in my opinion though others may disagree. Bearing in mind that most bags of feed cost between £6-£9 a 20kg bag, Blue Chip costs £36.50. It is cheaper the more that you buy:-
1 X 20kg bag £36.50 5 x 20kg bag £34.50 6 x 20kg bag 33.50 12 x 20kg bag £32.50.
In reality, not many people would buy it in bulk as the shelf life for most feeds is around 6 months. Therefore for most horse owners it would be false economy to buy more than 4 which would last 6 months. That is not an option to reduce costs with 4 bags, so realistically, most single horse owners would not buy in bulk. Also, storage is not easy. It takes up space and it is never worth having too much feed around that is not being used because of rats. Even when feed is stored correctly, rats still sometimes manage to get into feed bins although this is less likely in metal bins. Keeping feed bins on palates to ward of rats is a myth, as they climb.Availability # # # # # #
Blue Chip are very good in that, if you phone and pay over the phone by credit card, they will deliver the Blue Chip the next day. However, this is not much good to most horse owners as they would deliver to my house and I would not always be in.
The feed merchant accross the road from the stables wil order it for me but I have to ask. I prefer being able to pop over and buy feed as I need it.Incentive Scheme # # # # # # # # # #
Bags of Blue Chip have tokens on which can be exchanged for clothing, saddle cloths, baseball caps etc. I love something for nothing but it takes a while to collect enough tokens and the feed is expensive so it doesn`t feel like something for nothing. I mustn`t knock it though, it is a good idea.
Do I feed Blue Chip now? # # # # # # # # # # # # # #
I no longer feed Blue Chip because of the cost. I was pleased with the product. My horse loved it. She looked good when being fed it, but she also looked good when on other feed. It enabled me to feed less hard feed but the differece was not significant enough to warrant paying for the Blue Chip even though I was saving on vitamins. The Blue Chip would only last me about 6 weeks, this makes it expensive. It made me feel blue paying £36.50 though it is usually possible to collect money of tokens for £2 from free horsey magazines to make it a bit more bearable.

Difficult really. It is an excellent product and good for the horse. As an average horse owner, I find it too expensive.
My horse was in good condition prior to using it but it has produced excellent results for horses needing to improve condition.
My horses are both ridden most days and are all rounders. Blue Chip is used for a lot of top class competition horses. Top class horses are worth a lot of money and expend a lot more energy working hard.
Most horses manage very well without Blue Chip and most owners, like me can`t affford it. I htink for those that require that bit extra, it probably is worth it.
Blue Chip has other supplements on offer as well as `bites` which are suposed to help clean the horses teeth!
Their website is www.bluechipuk.com which is a colourful and easy to navigat website whick shows photos of horses in excellent condition which are fed Blue Chip as well as before and after photos.
Advantages: conditions horses to the full Disadvantages: possibly bit pricey
...about my 3rd bag of blue chip now and must say how impressed I have been with the results. I started using blue chip as my oldest mare who is now 21 years (young) didn;t have that nice sleek coat that she used to have, it started growing in slightly longer and didn't look as shiny even though she was on good food with added supplements, so I decided after reading the reports to change her to blue chip. So far the results have been excellent, her ... ...Blue chip helps the gut to work properly and digest food to its full. At the moment I am only feeding blue chip with some hi-fi light, I have been able to cut out all the cod liver oil and benevit supplements I was feeding her. It may sound a bit pricey at around £35 a bag, but a bag is lasting me about 6 weeks and with no supplements is cheaper in the long run. I do still feed her arthritis supplements though. Be careful not to overfeed as a 15.2hh ...

...a really good product.
Blue chip is a feed balancer (unsurprisingly, given the name!), that you feed alongside your horse or pony's usual feed ration. It is full of all the viatmins and minerals that they need for optimum health. It also offers a yeast culture that supports the action of the hind gut and so should help digestion.
It comes in a small pellet form and is really palatable to the horse. I have never known any horse to refuse it. It ... ...a mug full once daily. Blue Chip produce a measuring cup.
There is also a "diet" version which is great for those with or prone to laminitis as it delivers nutrients without calories. This is really important with animals that have to be on a restricted diet or with small appetites
Blue Chip feed balancer can be used to put condition (substance, not fat) on, or to maintain those in work. It is great for any animal faced with some degree of stress ...

Advantages: Healthy coat, bright eyes, over all condition Disadvantages: Price £34 a bag!!! Aaarrgghh!
I have been feeding Blue Chip to my horse now for about the past 3 years. I own a Welsh Section D. He was 5 years old when i got him and he looked a little behind and under weight for his age, so after getting some helpful advise from Sandy, my riding instructor, I put him on Blue Chip and within 2 weeks i started noticing a difference. His coat was really shiney, his eyes were really bright, his weight gain was good and his over all condition was ... ...pony nuts, hot mix and blue chip. I also like to add a little cod liver oil and garlic to his feed as well. He seems to like it, he has never turned his nose up at it and believe me, he has done to some foods, hehe. I know that at £34.00 a bag Blue Chip sounds and is expensive, but it does wonders for your horse and after all, they are worth it!

...each time I have used blue chip original to give that all needed boost of health. The first was a 15hh welsh section D that was 4 years old at the time, she was newly backed, incredibly excitable but hugely underweight, I used blue chip as a supplement to her daily feeds and within 6 weeks (1 sack) the improvement was unbelievable, I had a good size mare with a glossly coat, bright eyes and yet still a trainable temperament. The second was a 16.2hh ... ...After about 3 months on blue chip supplement he was a new horse, again a nice weight, good temperament, alert and with a super sleeky coat.
Although other factors affect the condition of a horse I believe that blue chip will give any horse that added boost they sometimes need. The blue chip original is fairly pricey at around £35 per bag which I find lasts approximately 6 weeks, however this is an allround conditioning supplement so in general other ...
