'Walking in the rain...'

Advantages: A superb introduction to the Emerald Isle's walking possibilities...
Disadvantages: ...so long as you've been previously introduced to walking in the first place

feel a sense of intimacy. I had a few coffee table compilation books covering the whole British Isles (and therefore possessing Irish sections), but these were books whose gloriously enticing photos and slightly limited route selections were unfortunately wrapped up in rucksack-unfriendly dimensions. I did also have a casually acquired copy of Paddy Dillon's corkingly idiosyncratic 'The Mountains Of Ireland', with its rubbish diagrams and 'interesting' peak criteria (sod maths, if Paddy liked the look of it it was in). Basically, nothing entirely satisfactory. (Later on, I acquired Lonely Planet's guide to Irish walking too, because a man can never have too many guidebooks to pore over while otherwise engaged in the smallest room in the house: a good selection, but cluttered with too much extraneous information and containing at least one ...

Review of Best Irish Walks - Joss Lynam

NHS walk in centre, Portsmouth

Advantages: Fantastic service, well looked after, prompt and efficient staff
Disadvantages: Had to wait for a bit, but not as long as I was expecting!

A&E fills me with dread. I do kind of work with the it's not an emergency, it can wait, and therefore I'm going to be stuck there for hours to be potentially told to rest it and it'll be fine, which is frustrating, for me and the staff I imagine! I've also been on the other side and rushed in as an emergency on more than a few occasions, so I really do think it's right that I'd have to wait whilst priority cases are sorted out, and I don't want to be wasting anyone's time! On the other hand I know going to my GP will result in me being told to go to A&E to get it checked, so don't really see the point in that either! Then a friend suggests I go down to the "Minor Injuries Walk in Centre" at the other local hospital. (St. Mary's in Portsmouth) For some reason, I'd not even thought about it, but it was definitely the best option ...

Review of NHS Walk-in Centres

A Walk on the Wild Side

Advantages: Enjoyable romp through the Appalachian wilderness
Disadvantages: None

"Not long after I moved with my family to a small town in New Hampshire, I happened upon a path that vanished into a wood on the edge of town." The previous paragraph is the first step in Bill Bryson's description of his journey hiking the Appalachian Trail as chronicled in his book, A Walk in the Woods. The Appalachian National Scenic Trail is the longest continuous marked footpath in the World, and stretches from Katahdin in Maine to Springer Mountain in Georgia - or vice versa. It passes through some of the most interesting and scenic landscapes of the Eastern USA, wandering the ridges and valleys of the Appalachian mountain ranges for more than 2,150 miles - the actual distance is dependent on whose figures you use! At the age of 44, following his return to his native land after 20-odd years in the UK, Bryson decided to ...
