(+) Cheap to do when done correctly, good results. (-) FEAR FACTOR - You will look silly if you do it without results. Difficult to carry a large amount.
I have been fishing for over 25 years approx and can say the secret to catching the big fish is how you feed the lake or river before you start on a serious fishing expedition.
It gets pretty expensive buying your Boiles from your local fishing shop and the more you get into fishing the more determined you are to make the perfect boilie yourself.
I did try the pound shop version but can only say I didn't catch one fish all day long so best to avoid the cheapest versions on the market although they are the perfect base to mix your own ingredients to and the cheapest way to do it..
Many of the ingredients are cheaper such as pure fishmeal from your garden centre rather than your local fish tackle shop. Ok they might not like to hear that but as you are giving the fish your food free then the cheapest option is the one we would all use.
Many people will use the powdered colouring again available at you local tackle shop but the cheap food colorants from your local supermarket do just as well and considering how long they are in the water you just need a few minutes to attract the fish rather than hours. I f you don't even get a nibble in the first fifteen minutes then just move your location even if it is by just a few yards.
I always use fresh eggs in my own boiles as I'm sure this is the secret to catching huge carp. If you add too much though it will scare your fish off to some other line and you don't want that at all.
Here is my perfect recipe which I would like you to try and give me feedback on how you got on with it
200g of fishmeal 200g of ground semolina 400g of white breadcrumb 150g of milk powder 50g of robin red 50/50 mix (optional) Powdered colouring (your choice of colour and amount) I like to use bright yellow or orange baits for high visibility. Flavouring of your choice (I am currently trialling the Source by Terry Hearn) 6 eggs. Olive oil
Firstly you need to place all the dry ingredients in a very large bowl
Next whisk your eggs thoroughly with the olive oil.
Roll your mixture and cut into the desired size.
Place small blobs of your broilie mix into the microwave and cook for about five minutes.
If they float in a glass of water they are ready and if they don't float cook for a further minute at a time until they do float
Keep in an airtight container such as the snap and seal range and use ASAP as they soon use their flavour and scent to attract those fish you are yearning to catch.
Advantages: Saves Money on shop bought popups and popup mixes and make as many as you like without breaking the bank Disadvantages: Stinks the Kitchen and upsets the missus
...base mix to pop-up my boilies or even fork out 5 pound plus on a small tub of pop-ups. After trying many different types of products and various methods, I decided to experiment a bit to see if I could make it cheaper. I always like to mix my own base mixes up, either by buying a 50/50 mix and mixing in my own ingredients with it, or by simply just using my own homemade base mix.
Either of these two and other shop bought mixes will all do the same ... ...occasions. You now have your boilies ready to boil.
Right here’s the trick. Pick out your favoured hook baits from your batch of boilies (before boiling).
I choose about 30 of my favoured baits, and place about 10 at a time on a microwavable plate. Put them in the microwave for about 1 minute on high power. Once you have done this, check the texture of the boilie and see if its starting harden. If it’s still soft to touch and feel, then put them ...

Advantages: Good baits Disadvantages: Were cruel to the fish.
Im big, BIG into my fish KEEPING now. Once upon a time I was BIG into my fish CATCHING. Its only recently that I realised its not nice being forced the wrong way through the water with all of your bodyweight dragged along by a hook through your lip.
Still as a teenager, I caught some great Carp.
There are 4 types of Carp really in the UK. Crucian Carp are much smaller than their 3 big brothers, the Mirror, the Leather and the Common Carp.
To hook ... ...on a golden hook and bobs your uncle.
Early in the season, you can catch the smaller carp of the top with dog biscuits. I used to prefer to hunt deeper in the water. In search of the big monsters.
It was because of this that I ledgered with boilies.
Floating ones could be used to keep your bait out of the silt or weeds.
I experimented for years with different types and flavours.
Yes Flavours. These small balls that are about 2cm in diameter ...

Advantages: very versitile bait Disadvantages: not many i can think of
...these boilies" but why??
Boilies are essentially just a mixture of powdered proteins ect mixed with egg and boiled so why do so many fish love em?? The truth is not many people know but one of the reasons could be because of the high nutritional value contained in many top brands and another may be because even if you were to dangle a fluff ball right inm front of a carp's nose chances are they would bite it.
Boilies are very versitile as the come ... ...the boil and put you boilies in for roughly 2 mins. At this stage you could add flavours to the boiling water as well. Drain the boilies off let them cool then seal in an airtight container or if allowed freeze them.
Flavours can be brought from a fishing shop but here are some of my own which can be brought from tesco ect.
Curry powder or paprika for winter
Golden or maple syrup
liquidized hot dogs
liquidized sweetcorn
strawberry jam(melted ...

Advantages: Catching Fish Disadvantages: Not Catching Fish
...the actual nut.
These boilies come with a shelf-life, freezable or pop-up.
Apparently carp love them because they find the oils and the flavour irresistable and also because they like the texture.
So pop one of these boilies on your hook and your bound to catch!!!!
Dont hold to me to that though will ya. ...

Advantages: Acurate, sleek, reliable and well priced Disadvantages: None
...This one is for the fisherman or to be more politically correct the angler as it is both male and females who now enjoy this popular sport.
I seem to get through bait catapults at an alarming rate, that was until they brought out the Rod Hutchinson Horizon Catapults. There are two available, one is a dedicated boilie catapult the other a particle and gropund bait one. Made from black alloy frames, heavy duty latex and black PVC pouches these catapults are extremely robust.
The boilie version holds up to six 16-18 mm boilies and casts them well grouped at medium range and can fire a single bait a great distance, further than any other catapult I have used.
The particle version has a wide mesh pouch which accomodates a decent size bait ball without squashing it. A small loop for your finger on the back of both pouches make this...

Advantages: Mail Order, Good prices, cheap bait Disadvantages: To far away for me to travel to
...There are so many fine fishing shops about these days that it can be difficult to sort the wheat from the chaff. Hinders is one of those stores which rates as the wheat.
I frequently shop using their mail order facilities but have never yet visited their actual store. It is I am told easy to get to the shop as it is just off junction 16 of the M4 at Manor Garden Centre, Cheney Manor, Swindon. I will get round to visiting them next time I find myself down that way.
They stock a huge range of takle, baits and accessories and will send you an excellent brochure upon request. Goods ordered always arrive on time and in top condition. You can even buy Angling Gift Vouchers for that hard to buy for fisherman (or woman).
I regularly buy my boilies and other carp baits from here as they are the cheapest I have found so far and the baits...
