The price is a little more expensive than an average point and shoot but still well below a Digital SLR. The size and weight are a little above that of a point and shoot but again still a great way off a Digital SLR. But the features more than carry the price, weight and slight size issues. The Cannon Powershot s50 is all round an excellent camera, I find it very easy to use. The settings are easy to select the main controls being on the top mounted dial with less often used settings accessed via the menu button and displayed on the lcd screen. In most conditions the “auto” setting produces good results. The 3 x optical and 4 x digital zoom is excellent and easy to use via a slider mounted on top of the body. The auto focus, which used ... ...when using the flash, but struggles in low lighting. This can easily be overcome by switching to manual focus although this option can only be used with the optical zoom. Focusing is achieved by holding in the manual focus button and using the rocker switch on top of the camera to focus in or out. ...Firstly, it is made by Canon which has a good reputation for build and quality and seems to have embraced the digital market wholeheartedly. Secondly, it is 5Mp which gives you more than enough pixels to play with for cropping and enlarging. For everyday purposes, 3Mp will get you perfectly adequate 6x4 or 5x7 photos, but 5Mp gives you just that bit more versatility.
The automatic exposure settings are fine, and I use them regularly for most of ... ...want to I can get aperture priority, shutter priority or full manual settings. The settings to increase or decrease the exposure by up to 3 stops is very handy too. The autobracketing function is useful too so you have no excuse for getting the exposure wrong! Advantages: Takes great photographs, easy to use. Disadvantages: A bit Heavy, and lens is a bit slow opening.
I bought this camera last year and have taken it on a number of holidays. The camera is easy carried (usually in my bum bag) and easily operated. Prior to buying this camera I had an SLR, but I now have similar wuality pictures and have less to carry. One thing I would recommend is that a case is bought for the camera as the LCD screen hag got scored in the bum bag.
The picture quality from this camera is exceptional and I have printed FULL size ... ...The software which comes with the camera is easy to use and is quick to allow the pictures to be downloaded. The larger the picture size the slower it is transfered. Once on the computer the images can be altered and a good range of effects can be obtained.
ALL in all I am very pleased with this camere and would reocmmend it to both a novice and established used of a digital camera. ...

I bought the Canon Powershot S50 having done extensive research on 5 megapixel cameras. It has been every bit worth the money i spent. Having taken 1000 photos on my holiday i can safely say it was a excellent purchase.
Pros:
1. Quality of output is excellent especially at high resolution.
2. Zooming capacity is great especailly since it has both manual and optical zoom. 3. Panoramic pics and stitchting software allows the more advanced photographer ... ...solid.
5. Decent size LCD screen and playback of images
6. Options for slideshows and selective display of images
7. Easy to install software 8. Images can be zoomed and selective zooming is possible.
9. Output can be projected on TV's which is great for sharing photos.

...The Canon Powershot S50 is basically an upgrade of their old model, the S45, and they have certainly done a fantastic job in maintaining their high standards. With five megapixels, you can always be sure that your pictures are going to be of sufficiently high quality to develop into print photos. Unlike a lot of the cheaper cameras there is no pixel interpolation (i.e. the images taken are sharp and well-defined.)
One excellent feature of the Powershot is the large extent to which the settings can be customised. Much like an SLR, you can set your f-stops and shutter speeds, as well as simulating different ISO film settings from 100 to 400. This is excellent in low lighting conditions and night shots, although in order to get sufficient light the delay in such situations is much longer, and you are advised to get a tripod...

...After about two months of considering of purchasing a digital camera, I decided on this one. It may not be the most stylish (such as the IXUS from Canon) or it may not be the largest amount of pixels ever (such as that offered from an SLR camera), but what a camera!
With 5 megapixels, you can print easily at A4, even larger. It also includes a digital zoom of 3x, and optical zoom of 4x - 12x zoom!
The camera feels quality: robust, tough, durable and solid. A dial on the top of the camera allows you to choose from many different modes, including auto, moving objects, photo-stitch, landscapes, portrait and movie capture (with full sound i might add).
What more can I reccomend this to you? Simply this: quality does speak for itself, and if you can get hold of this camera, you have got yourself a real gem of camera...

The PowerShot S50 incorporates a high resolution CCD sensor with 5.0 effective megapixels (approximately 5.3 megapixels in total). This sensor allows the camera to capture still images as large as 2592x 1944 pixels and movies as large as 320 x 240 pixels. The PowerShot S50 features a highly compact and sharp 3x optical zoom lens with a focal length of 35-105mm (35mm equivalent). The lens features a maximum aperture of f2.8 (wide angle) to f4.9 (telephoto). RAW mode allows you to obtain original image data, recording the image direct from the CCD without any image processing. The PowerShot S50 has 13 shooting modes, which can be selected from a mode dial on the top of the camera, including full manual controls, and a 'Custom' mode enabling you to set and save the camera parameters. The PowerShot S50 incorporates the DIGIC processor for even better color reproduction. The PowerShot S50 supports PTP, a standard protocol.
