...Overall:
The Avid BB7 mechanical discbrake is a good option if you're looking for an aftermarket mechanical discbrake that's both affordable and adjustable. By most accounts (including mine), the Tri-Align Caliper Positioning System is the easiest way to mount a discbrake on a mountain bike, and it allows you to spend less time cursing tiny shims and stomping around your shop or garage.
While I wouldn't argue that the long-term performance of the Avid mechanical brakes trumps that of most hydraulic brakesystems on the market, they're far and above the best mechanical discbrakes that I've tried. If you have the choice between a set of Avid mechanicals and pretty much any other mechanical discbrake available today, go with the Avid and save yourself a bunch of headaches and many days of sore hands. Advantages: Excellent lever feel, stopping power, durability Disadvantages: when they squeel, they REALLY squeel
..., Coed-y-Brenin, 7Stanes, Lake District and Fort William - and they keep coming back for more. Even now, the feel and positive feedback you get from the brakes in all conditions defies logic and impresses me on every ride.
If I was to criticise...

Advantages: Excellent performance in wet/muddy conditions, rim friendly, good wear rates Disadvantages: Pricier than the competition
...pad and cable. They're also a bit cheaper than buying the Kool Stop brake blocks.
The Downsides?
The only real downside is cost. You pay around £7.50 as opposed to £3-4 for the cheaper brands.
Overall
Barring discsbrakes, these pads are the best brake upgrade to your bike for wet and muddy rides....
