I have owned both the 3-wood and 5-wood in the Cobra SZ "Hyper Steel" Fairway Woods series for approximately 8/9 months and I have to say that I am very impressed with their performance. Previously I had not being a confident player with the fairway woods and had struggled for both confidence and consistancy. However, since changing to these clubs I have a new found confidence in my longer clubs and I believe that much of this is due to the amazing contrast between these and my previous woods. The deep face and large clubhead give assurance to even the least confident of fairway woods players and I think that the clubs appearance has had a major affect on me. Cobra advertise this "larger profile" as giving players "longer, more accurate shots" and I cannot argue with that from my experience.
Cobra are becoming a dominant force in the market for "long game" clubs with much success with both drivers and fairway woods in recent years. Their clubs are generally forgiving and long and this SZ range (Sweet Zone) is more of the same. However, these clubs are no longer the most recent on the market having being released a couple of years ago now. Even though they have been replaced by new lines of clubs they remain as a great, modern example of golf technology and the fact that they have been superseded by newer models only serves to lower their price!! The clubs are now available for £60/£70 from golf stores and even less on eBay having previously had an RRP of over £100.
As well as looking good behind the ball the SZ fairway woods have a great level of technology on their side too. As standard they are fitted with a high-spec Cobra/Aldila shaft, a Cobra Tour Velvet grip and come with a stylish headcover too. Personally I have had no problems with either shaft or grip and both remain as the standard.
With the hybrid club coming into the golf market in recent times, the fairway woods' position in theaverage golf bag is coming under threat of late. I personally no longer play with the 3 wood of these in every round, I just rotate between that and a hybrid depending on the course I am playing and the current state of my game. So, to help with people who are caught somewhere between the two I would like to point out that the deep face of the Cobra SZ Fairway Woods helps them become easier than traditional fairway woods to hit from difficult lies and from in the rough. However, they are certainaly not good enough to contend with the hybrid clubs from these situations. I would reccommend a comprimise of both to give you flexibility but obviously some players will have a definate preference between the two.
To round this off, I believe that anyone looking to purchase a new fairway wood should give the SZ range a try because the confidence they have given me has being fantastic. They are forgiving on off-centre hits and are longer than any of its competitors in terms of price.
