I use a Concept2 rowing machine (modelD) almost every day as part of my training and despite not being my favourite type fo exercise, they are definately a fantastic way to get fit. I also do test on these machines over 2000m as described above and over a set time (30minutes). I tend to most of my sessions for fitness, but normally do long session (60mins+) making a 1:50 per 500m "split" however this took years to achieve.
Drawbacks
The major drawback of using the rowing machine is the repetition of the movement (create sore hands/bum), as it can result in boredom and hence not spending enough time on the rowing machine; this can be fought against by training with another person or playing music.

I am what you would describe as a fitness freak and have used many pieces of gym equipment. The Concept2 Rower is bar far the most superior rower I have used. I use the Model E which is a newer version of the rower and immediately recongised by the frame being higher off the ground allowing a raised seating position which in my opinion is a far more natural and comfortable position.
This rower is fitted with a performance Monitor known as PM4, simply the key pad you enter the distance/time and so forth. Being wireless enabled allows you to actually race another rower using a concept 2, as well as wireless heart rate monitoring.
The rower even has a game function which allows you to actually add some enjoyment into your workout, it consists of a simple fish game where you must avoid the larger fish and eat the smaller ones ...

I ordered a 320D SE 1998cc 2002 model from my local BMW dealer in October 2001 for delivery in December 2001. I was impressed with the dealer (Dick Lovett), as the sales guy was not at all pushy but allowed me to take my time looking over the car and responded well to questions I raised. The first test drive I had was with the sales guy and lasted around 40 minutes, he then arranged for me to have the car for the whole day that weekend. This whole day test drive was excellent and really let me get know the car without any sales person around, and after that I was hooked and continue to purchase the car. The list of options available is huge and it took some time to decide what I wanted.
