My experience of the Coolmax Shinguards is a little different from most people's as I never actually wear them for football because I don't play! Hopefully this review will still be useful though.
My job involves moving a lot of heavy equipment, most of which is at shin level, and after painfully gashing my shins for the 1000th time I decided to protect them. I haven't been able to find any suitable industrial-type protective guards so I decided to try a pair of football shinguards instead. I have been through many shinguards trying to find a pair that provided sufficient protection but are also comfortable enough to wear for 18-20 hours at a time.
The Coolmax shinguards are my favourite yet. They have a tough protective polypropylene shell and foam padding and are lined with Coolmax material that does a great job of whisking sweat away from your skin. I cut the ankle protection sock off because it wasn't needed and they still fit fine. I've found the protection they offer is superb. They've saved me from injury many times and now need replacing (with another pair of Coolmax guards!) They are the most comfortable shinguards I have ever worn, and as someone who needs to wear shinguard protection for up to 20 hours at a time comfort is really important, and these are the best I've ever found.
I cycle a lot as well and almost always wear the Coolmax guards when I'm on my bike. A pedal in the shin is very VERY painful, but I've smacked the pedal into my shin many times on rides when I've been wearing the Coolmax guards and never once have I been even slightly hurt. They've stopped EVERYTHING that's been thrown at them at work and on the bike and some of those impacts have been pretty hard.
Like I say most people don't use football shinguards for protection while at work or on a bike, but even though they might not seem the most appropriate form of protection they fulfil the purpose I need them for perfectly. I have worn heavier more protective shinguards but I find them generally very uncomfortable after a few hours wear. The Coolmax guards still provide an excellent level of protection and can sit strapped onto my shins for 20 hours and still feel very comfortable. Dunno what they'd be like for football but if you need shin protection at work and while cycling they're great!
