County cricket bats are manufactured by a company called Hunts. They have been in production since 1940, owned by the famous Trimmings family, who are well known bat makers from the St. Neots region. Later they moved the factory to Huntingdon, and they are still produced there today.

The actual bat itself can be bought either in the regular size or as a long handle bat like the one I have. It has an attractive and also very comfortable blue coloured grip around the handle. The grip is held onto the blade with tape, which despite not looking the best, has proved to be very durable. The blade itself is lovely and smooth, with the Hunts County Bats logo, a stag motife and also the Insignia E.S. logo. The reverse of the blade is adorned with various designs, mainly in green and red with the logo also putting in another appearance.

The Insignia E.S. variety of bat is a very comfortable to use bat, which can neither be described as heavy or light. It strikes a good balance between the power and control aspects of the game of cricket, allowing both powerful drives and pulls, as well as the more delicate cuts and sweeps to be played with ease. Various professionals have been known to use County bats such as David Gower and Nick Knight, and some even use this particular variety.

One problem that I have with this bat is that the edges of the bat, especially down towards the middle are quite thick, this means that if you do happen to edge a delivery, (which I do all the damned time!!!) it is very likely to fly off and carry to the fielders. I guess the advantages are that it makes the bat less likely to crack if it hits the edge, as well as encouraging good techniques, by encouraging you not to get the edge onto the ball.

All in all I would recommend this bat to anyone. I have been using this bat now since I was 15, and it hasn't cracked at all. With a coat of oil painted on before each season, the blade should play as well as any other on the market. It is an ideal bat for younger cricketers as well as more seasoned players, as due to its versatility, a player can grow with this bat, due to its balance between control and power. Basically the bat can be utilised by any player no matter what technique they develop, and I do hope that County bats are continued to be produced at this quality, and can give a good alternative to the major brands Slazenger, Gunn & Moore and Grey Nicholls.

Thanks for reading this and I hope it has been of some use to somebody as we start this another cricket season.

P.S. I am sorry if I have bored you non cricket fans out there. ;)
