At first glance it can certainly look that way when you see the quirky CrankBrothers Eggbeaters on a bike. These are minimal in the extreme, and look unlikely to be able to operate in the intended manner. But operate they do, and pretty well too.
Eggbeaters take their name from the shape which, clearly, makes them look like they're ready to whisk up an omelette. They are a type of 'clipless' pedal (quick precis, there are basically three types of pedal: normal 'flat' style; flats with 'clips' - the little straps that go over your foot to attach you; and clipless, which attach you to the pedal by a variety of methods, culminating in a cleat on the sole of your shoe).

In fact Mr Shimano started his career with a bicycle interest, having a special passion for freewheels and derailleurs.
By the time the firm took up their fishing tackle side, they already had the biggest bicycle factory in the world.
They have ventured into snowboarding and golf equipment as well, and are clearly concerned to provide good equipment through which folk can enjoy the outside world.
In the world of cycling, they have introduced loads of ideas and technology at every level.
If you watch any professional cycle race, these days, you'll spot Shimano products all over the place.

Advantages: LightWeight, indestructible, good price Disadvantages: not the Cheapest of Cranks
...it incredibly strong plus the fact the bash ring is about 1/2 an inch think. The cranks are cnc machined from one piece of aluminum making them incredibly light.
Ridding with these cranks is a delight the power transfer is great as the crank and chain ring and bash ring are so solid there is no flex in the arms and the bash ring is low profile so gives you that little extra clearance but yet protects your chain perfectly.
The Cranks come in wither taper or Isis fitting, Isis is a great as no matter how hard you tighten the bolt, once you want to remove the crank remove the bolt and generally just give the crank a tap and off it comes. The Most amazing thing however is that these cranks have a lifetime warranty, even stated for trials or Downhill use. There so confident that there indestructible.
