OK, I've managed to ignore the ubiquitous crocs for the last two summers now, but all of a sudden something changed. One of my friends mentioned that she was thinking of purchasing some Crocs, which led me to investigate the Crocs website. Whilst there, I discovered the 'ten benefits of Crocs' top reasons you gotta have 'em

" 1. Really soft, super comfortable, molds to your feet
2. Barely there, weighing only 6 ounces
3. Vented so air passes through, keeping feet cool

and even more reasons

4. Non-marking slip-resistant soles*
5. Bacteria and odor resistant
6. Ultra-hip Italian styling
7. Port holes allow water and sand to pass through
8. Can be sterilized in water and bleach
9. Easy maintenance, just wipe clean
10. Orthotic molded foot bed for ultimate comfort and support"

(From Crocs.com)
Ok, so now I was being won over... though I would question point number 6, especially now every man and his dog seems to be selling replicas (even more garish than the original in some cases)! I think Crocs (or to be precise the Crocs Cayman - which to me is the definitive Croc) look pretty fugly, but when it comes to shoes I'm one for comfort not looks.

The price of Crocs Caymans is £29.99 at most websites, though special offers can be found. I bought mine from office.co.uk, in Celery green colour (as this was reduced to £19.99). I think £29.99 is quite expensive for what is no more than a pair of plastic shoes, however if you compare them as a viable alternative to something like a pair of Clarke's sandals, then the price is similar if not cheaper.

When they arrived I was quite suprised how light they feel. I have seen 'faux' Crocs in Asda, and they feel quite different to the 'genuine' article. Mine were made in China, though I understand they are made in several different countries. Trying them on I was expecting to be blown away with the comfort. This was not the case, well not at first. They feel like you would imagine plastic shoes to feel when first put on - but as they warm to body temperature they start to become more and more comfortable. I walked about two miles in them and apart from some slight chafing to the bridge of one of my feet they were fine. I used to my feet being cut to shreds everytime I have new sandals (even Clarkes' ones) so I was pretty pleased with this. I was expecting the rear retaining bar to chafe, but in reality you can barely even notice it. It just produces a reassuring fit that prevents 'claw toes' that you may have with standard clog style shoes. They are really easy to clean, just run under the outdoor tap, or scrub if necessary.

I think they look OK, the celery colour is very nice, but quite bright. However, there is plenty of choice in Crocs I would think every taste is catered for. Myra McQueen was wearing a pink pair in Hollyoaks the other night, so I think you could say they have acheived true chav status, though I think they are suitable for all, men, women and children.

Durability: Time will tell. I have clocked up about 5 miles in mine, I reckon, and some of the tread on the heel corner has noticeably faded - my heels always wear out very quickly though. I will keep an eye on this and update as necessary.

So, to conclude - Comfortable - yes. Easy to maintain - yes. Stylish -umm, the jury's still out on that one!
