A few years back I used to fish in my local angling club matches, and although these matches were just fun events with club trophy’s given out at the end of the season, there were also a few pennies to be won each week. It soon became clear, that to get in the money you had to be able to fish with a pole as a lot of the venues we fished were suited to this kind of fishing.
So off I went to my local tackle shop in search of a pole, having used my local tackle shop for all my fishing life; they knew me as a regular customer. This helped a great deal, as they knew the sort of venues I fished, and they recommended that I buy the Team Daiwa Matchlite.
This pole is 11 metres long, and weighs 755grms. It has 9 sections and the top 2 are telescopic, it is supplied with a spare top 2 sections.
At the time this was a Very light pole, it is suited to a variety of situations, but excels where you are liable to catch lots of small fish, places like canals and flowing water. It is sharp on the strike but because it has a supple action it will help you to stop bumping bigger fish, if you should be lucky enough to encounter any.
This pole handles well at full length, but I find it a lot better with the last section removed, which makes the length drop to about 9.5 metres. The joints are good and are not wearing out, and they come apart easily when unshipping. I have caught chub to 3lb and carp to 8lb on this pole, but I would not recommend you use it for fish above the 3lb to 4lb mark, as it’s a case of hang on and hope you land them.
When I purchased this pole it had a recommended price of approx. £450 but my local tackle shop did a deal for me, so it cost me £325. (How much profit do they really make?).
As with most fishing tackle, this product has probably been superseded by newer and more advanced? Models, but that means that if you see this pole in a shop, you’ll probably be able to get it cheaper, and if you want a budget pole to catch small fish then I highly recommend this one.
And yes I did win a few pennies (and then lost them playing cards on the coach home).
