'Thirteen' is one of my favourite films, which I watched after a friend recommended it to me. The film begins showing main character Tracy; a well-behaved, thirteen-year-old girl who begins high school and quickly realises that she seems to be "uncool". She quickly becomes envious of popular "bad girl" Evie, whom all the boys love and, as a result, aims to befriend Evie. Tracy slowly begins to catch Evie's eye by changing the way she dresses and trying to impress her. The two are soon inseparable. Tracy, however, is so heavily influenced by Evie's lifestyle and starts getting caught up in a whirlwind of drugs and sex in an attempt to be just like her. The two girls seem like best friends, but as the film progresses, things begin to fall apart, leading to a dramatic climax.

There's a famous story that Raymond Chandler once returned a corrected manuscript to the editor who had dared to question his judgement. "When I split an infinitive," he wrote, "I split it so it damn well stays split." Anyone who has read Chandler's The Long Goodbye understands that it doesn't have to make sense to be good writing.
To suggest something has style over substance has always seemed like such a damning dismissal, but Steven Soderbergh and his cast for the three Ocean movies have made this a glorious virtue. If you want a cohesive plot with character arcs and a recognisable 'journey' then you may as well turn round now. Ocean's Thirteen, the second sequel to a remake, is a mish mash of sketches, cameos and Vegas cool held together by the thinnest and most preposterous of plots.
