Advantages: Open late Disadvantages: Dirty changing room, crowded, equipment and facilities not always working
...Make sure you read the small print when signing your contract. Got fed up with Cricklewood Holmes Place after three and a half years of membership (roughly £2500's worth) and decided to cancel subscription. I really only used the place for the pool which was often crowded, or the lanes were restricted due to classes. Plus the men's changing room floor was often dirty, shower heads missing, shower gel bottles empty. Phoned to cancel and was told I had to confirm in writing giving 30 days notice. As I was fed up with the indifferent service I said I would just phone my bank and cancel the direct debit. I was then told that if I did Holmes Place would take action against me. What a fantastic customer relations policy!...

Advantages: loads of free stuff & towels provided; great facilites & variety; central location Disadvantages: slightly pricey; can get a bit overcrowded at certain times of the year
...this has now leapt to £65 a month, most of this increase happening over the last year (take note Holmes place - too many price leaps in a short time does not happy customer's make!)
I must admit that the facilities have been improved over this time but the number of members has also increased so I guess there is a trade off of sorts.
However, overall I think Holmes Place Barbican offers me good value for money. One of the best things about them is the clean towel service - this makes such a difference!!! White and fluffy and once finished you just throw them in the laundry for someone else to wash! It really is pure bliss and I have been so spoiled that I just would never consider joining a gym that did not offer this service ever again (not sure about you folks but in my household clean dry towels are a scarce commodity many mornings...

Advantages: Pilates class Disadvantages: non-existent customer service, smell, filth
...I have joined the LA Fitness in Sydenham online via Healthforce on 5th March. Healthforce has not taken the joining fee for about 3 weeks. During this time, the gym staff treated me like a non-payer (despite my explanations), which was very embarassing, so I've paid the joining fee in the gym. Healthforce then taken the cash from me a week later (30th March). Since then, I've been struggling to get the refund due to me from LA Fitness. It is now 25th June and I have no choice but to take LA Fitness to small claims court.
Nobody was able to explain to me how the whole refund process works and I've been sent from pillar to post (or from gym to Member services) and backwards number of times. Member "services" are located in parallel universe where they do not receive things like authorisation for refund from gym manager or letter from me...
