This is another item that I have in my equine first aid kit, is anyone bored yet? Most wounds require a topical application offering antiseptic properties. This Equine Aeroclens Aerosol does just that and is suitable for superficial wounds.

What Equine Aeroclens Aerosol?
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
Equine Aeroclens Aerosol is an ozone friendly aerosol. The title suggests that it is for use on horses, but the aerosol states that it is for use on superficial wounds, cuts and abrasions. It is also suitable for lambs navals, fly sclera and cuts and abrasions in sheep, so not just for horses then. It is an anitseptic and contains a blue dye for easy identification. It costs £7.99 for 150g and it lasts quite a while.

When to use Equine Aeroclens Aerosol.
* * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

The advice on the aerosol is to use it for superficial wounds. If the animal comes in with a cut or graze, assess the situation, ensure that the wound is thoroughly cleaned. If is does not need veterinary advice and if it is considered superficial, the aeroclens can be applied. Grazes are the ideal kind of superficial wound as they are not deep and they have a large enough surface area to apply an antiseptic with an aerosol. Superficial cuts are also good to apply the aeroclens, but it may be a bit more difficult to aim. It is for treatment of lambs navals aswell. I can`t comment on this though as the farmer where we are (well my horses anyway), uses iodine on his lambs navals.

Blue Dye.

It has a blue dye for easy identification. I am not really sure what easy identification means. At first I thought it was so that you can identify where the wound is on your horse. I thought that was a bit daft. If the wound was so superficial that you can`t see it, I wouldn`t even bother treating it. Then it struck me that, if it is meant for sheep also, they do tend to look quite similar. It would enable the farmer to pick out the sheep from the flock that has the injury, to see if it needs treating again. There are quite a few equine products that have a blue or purple or green colour to them. A lot of these can be used for sheep and cattle also though all seem to be for superficial wounds.

Is it easy to use?
* * * * * * * * * * * * *

Once the wound has been cleaned, that is the important bit, it is easy to apply. Spray and point. The only thing is, not all horses like aerosols, in fact in upsets some so much that it isn`t always easy to apply. The fact that it is ozone friendly though, means that is isn`t a really noisy one. This makes it a bit more horse friendly. As long as the horse doesn`t mind, it really is easy to apply. I once had an aerosol that was one of the noisy ones, prior to them becoming ozone friendly. My horse really didn`t like it and it was impossible to get near her. I haven`t used the ozone friendly one on this particular horse, but the others don`t mind it at all.

Benefits.
* * * * * * *

It offers antiseptic properties and is probably easier to apply than antiseptic cream. As long as the horse stands still, an ozone friendly aerosol probably gives complete wound coverage. I do use cream, depending on the type of wound but if the horse moves, the cream does aswell, you end up rubbing it off. At least with an aerosol, if the spray has hit the wound, it will stay on even if the horse moves and it goes on the wrong place aswell. Cream tends to slide aswell, especially if applied liberally. The aeroclens will stay on as it is a thin covering.

Do I use much?
* * * * * * * * * * * *

As this is for use on superficial wounds, I tend to use it once or twice and then don`t bother again as the wound is begining to heal. When the wound is slightly more than superficial, I apply cream for a few days. It is a handy thing to have in your first aid box, but not as widely used by me as creams. This is why I think, it lasts so long. Also, if you forget where the wound it as it is so superficial, just look for the blue patch!
