Esporta Croydon, also known as The Surrey Health and Rackets club, is part of a huge UK chain, owned by venture capitalist Simon Halabi. It was primarily a rackets club and has been responsible for helping train some of the up and coming Tennis stars of tomorrow.
Esporta is situated in a purpose built warehouse on a large industrial estate not far from Waddon mainline station and houses a spacious gymnasium, also known as the "Fitness Arena", a large family pool and an even larger olympic sized pool. There are numerous Tennis courts and several Squash courts. It is a club which encourages families, so may not suit those in search of halcyon days.
Having parked in the spacious car park you will come through the double doors into the reception area, where you will be greeted by the welcoming reception staff, who will actually greet you by name. The club is well laid out and encourages members and guests to view many of the things on offer on their way to the changing rooms.
You will pass some of the indoor tennis courts which have recently been refurbished, the restaurant area which provides various snacks, meals and beverages. The restaurant has an area for families, an adults only area as well as a main dining area. The outside terrace is lovely to relax and dine in, weather permitting and looks onto some of the outside Tennis courts. On the way to the changing rooms, you will pass the Fitness Arena, which can be looked down into from the mezzanine floor through windows.
The changing facilities are family orientated, so in the daytime, expect to see and hear the excited squeals of young children! There is an adult only changing area, but this not separated from the main area. There are numerous lockers and the club provides hairdryers, shower gel, shampoo (but not towels) and a spin dryer for wet swimwear. For the shyer member, there are a few private curtained cubicles. The showers consist of individual cubicles with a curtain and sensor touch water supply, which can sometimes be annoying, in the sense that if you are dried off and get too close to the sensor button, you will receive an impromptu shower.
Both male and female changing rooms have doors which lead to the pool and relaxation area, here you will find two jacuzzis, a steam room and a sauna, all these facilities are mixed sex.
The Fitness Arena has a vast number of cardiovascular training equipment, treadmills, cross trainers, steppers, rowers and bikes. You can watch and listen to Sky TV whilst you train on most of these machines. There is a small area where Spin classes are held a few times per week, at this time it can become very noisy. Along with the various pieces of resistance training machines, there are two free weights areas, one for lighter weights and a heavy area for aspiring bodybuilders. There are always members of the fitness team on duty, who are easily identifiable by their bright yellow polo shirts.
Other services provided at Esporta are a variety of studio classes, Pilates, personal training sessions, gym inductions, beauty treatments, tennis coaching, swimming lessons, sun beds, a chiropractor, creche and "The Zone", which provides after school and school holiday activities for youngsters. As Esporta is a very social club, many social activities are laid on throughout the year. These include quiz nights and various themed parties, events and holidays.
If you are seeking a leisure club which goes beyond just a gym and you want your whole family to be involved then Esporta is the place for you. Esporta values each member and will go out of their way to make you feel welcomed.
The main disadvantage I would say, is that it's not the easiest place to get to, if you're a non driver plus there are often too many noisy children running around. The membership fee is higher than the several other clubs in the surrounding area. However, you will be taking advantage of many more facilities. I would strongly recommend Esporta Croydon.
The opening hours of this club are. Monday to Friday 6.30am to 11.30pm and Saturday and Sunday 7.30am to 11pm
Advantages: i got it cheap Disadvantages: children. everywhere
Esporta is a pretty big brand. And the club at Croydon is a pretty big place. But it felt unwelcoming and geared towards spoilt little rich kids.
Now, I have to hold my hands up and admit I only had membership for a month, which was a promo which I got from a door to door man (I also got a month's membership at Green's in Croydon, which I preferred to Esporta by a long way)
Anyway. The club itself is quite geared towards raquet sports, and there ... ...away from Croydon, so had no need to find out what the permanent money stakes were. But you can get info at www.esporta.co.uk for all esporta clubs, and www.greensonline.co.uk for Green's. I would definitely recommend Green's, but Esporta needs to give me another cheapy deal to make my mind up... ...
