Before reading this review, it is necessary to understand a bit about bicycle lubricants. There are a number of different kinds, each with their advantages and disadvantages.

The first, most basic kind is the venerable wet lubricant, which is petroleum-based. Such lubricants have been around in one form or another for over 100 years. They work well over a wide temperature range, and are water-resistant, but they collect dirt. For this reason, wet lubricants are best for fair-weather road riding, but not optimal for bad weather and off-road riding.

The second kind of lube in common use is a dry lube, which is a wax-based lubricant. Such lubricants are designed to repel dirt, particularly from bicycle chains. But they do so by flaking off as you ride, which requires you to apply them more frequently than wet lubes. They also must be applied while the bike is warm and don't lubricate well in cold weather. This makes them terrific for off-road riding in warm weather, but a poor choice for cold weather use.

Finally, there are more exotic lubricants, also based on either petroleum or wax, but with added ingredients such as teflon, graphite and/or chemicals that manufacturers claim bond to metal and protect it. These claims are questionable, performance varies and some of these lubes are relatively expensive, but the aim is to create a lubricant that defies the basic properties of whatever it's based on (oil or wax). To the best of my knowledge, nobody has found that elusive super-lube yet, but some of these concoctions seem to work better under particular conditions than others.

Now that you have a better understanding of bicycle lubricants, here is the review of the product at hand!

Finish Line Cross Country Wet Lube is a traditional wet lubricant for chains and other bicycle components. Like all good wet lubes, it resists water well, but it does not repel dirt. I use this product on my primary commuter bicycle.

Application is simple enough. For chains, apply liberally (I use my fingers to do this), run the chain for a minute or so to work the lube in, let it set for a few minutes and then wipe off the excess with a rag. For cables, rub it into the bare cable at the friction points. For other parts, apply directly to the pivot points, work it in by moving the component and then wipe off the excess.

In my experience, one application of Finish Line Cross Country Wet Lube can last for up to six weeks at up to 130 miles per week, as long as the bike remains clean and dry. But I usually end up washing, degreasing and re-lubing the bike more frequently, as I get caught in downpours (and the water kicked up by bike tires from rain-soaked pavement is full of dirt) or encounter dust clouds kicked up by wind gusts at least once every 3-4 weeks.

My local bike shop offers an additional incentive to use Finish Line Cross Country Wet Lube: If I bring back the empty squeeze bottle, they refill it from their bulk containers for half of what they charge for a whole new squeeze bottle. See if your LBS will offer you a similar deal!

In summary, I like Finish Line Cross Country Wet Lube because it goes on easily, lubricates well, lasts a long time and, thanks to my LBS, is quite economical.
