My girlfriend and I have finally got round to joining a gym (a belated new year resolution). We went round a couple of gyms in the area, bearing in mind that we needed to be about 10-15 minutes away from home so we wouldn't have the excuse of being too far away to go :o)

Fitness First in Bromborough is 12 minutes away from us, situated on a large trading estate with an ASDA, Comet, Curry's, Halfords, etc. So you can combine your workout with picking up the shopping too.

The facilities at the gym are all clean and well kept, if a little crowded. Not that I notice as I am usually too knackered. All the cardio machines have head-phone sockets so you can listen to music or watch the TV, there are eight all on different stations from BBC1 to Sky sports and MTV.

There is an area for free weights and an area of the toning machines. Also there is a large studio area that you can work out in if it is not being used by one of the many and varied free classes.

Through the changing rooms are 3 saunas. A humid one, a dry heat one and an aromatherapy one.

After your workout, there is a lounge area to sit and relax with free tea, coffee and juice while you read the complimentary papers. In common with all the fitness first clubs this one has a free 24hr video/dvd rental library which is a nice touch.

Membership comes in 2 forms off-peak - Monday to Friday before 4pm (you just have to be in before 4pm, unlike some clubs they won't throw you out at 4!) and weekends after 2pm - and peak - anytime. Prices vary from £25/month for off-peak and £35/month peak. One advantage is that the minimum period is 3 months membership, which means you can commit to the gym without feeling tied down to a 12 month contract... I personally do not understand why some gyms insist on a 12 month contract. The joining fee is about £100.

Overall a friendly and welcoming club thats good value for money too. If you intend to join, contact me and I will recomend you... that way you get and 80% discount on the joining fee and I get a bottle of wine :o)
