I suppose it helps that I havenīt had to pay yet, as I have always gone with free vouchers I have won on an Internet lotto, or on their free trial weekends.
I think there are different levels of membership according to peak and off-peak usage, and the top membership fee was more than 30 pounds per month last time I checked, so if there is two of you it can become ... ...and spend a couple of hours there everyday. I have been to several of the gyms, sports centres in the area and Fitness First seems to be the best one so far. I suppose it helps that I havenīt had to pay yet, as I have always gone with free vouchers I have won on an Internet lotto, or on their free trial weekends. I think there are different levels of membership according to peak and off-peak usage, and the top membership fee was more than 30 pounds per month last time I checked, so if there is two of you it can become quite expensive, unless you are absolutely serious about your fitness and spend a couple of hours there everyday. And we canīt forget there is a joining fee, which covers for administration costs and you usually get a sports bag, a towel, headphones for the machines, so you can listen to the radio/tv while you are working and something else.
Itīs not in the town centre so you cannot go during your lunch hour if you want to spend your break from work in the gym. It seems to be quite small, but I have never had problems with the number of people there. There are plenty of machines both for aerobic training and toning for everybody.
The staff are extremely friendly, always smiling and you feel really welcome in the gym. Additional services that you get is free copy of a newspaper (usually a good quality one), complimentary drinks ( coffee and soft drinks), I have often had complimentary crisps, snacks and even fruit as part of some promotion as well, and free rental of videos for a day. They have a dry sauna and a wet sauna. They used to have a jacuzzi but it has now been removed, something to do with hygiene, they have now installed an aromatherapy room which is just like a smelly (on account of the essential oils) sauna, but without the heat. I must say I found this irritating for my skin and my eyes, so I only spent about 30 seconds in it.
If you want to do some guided activity/class, they have things to suit most people, including "new" stuff such as Yogalates. And you can also get some personal traning if you want a programme to lose weight or have specific needs.
The changing rooms are great:huge lockers, free shampoo, shower gel and conditioner, use of hairdriers, etc.
Anyway, if you are really committed to losing weight or getting fit in a long term basis and the cost doesnīt bother you, give them a go. They are great.
Advantages: friendly staff, nice atmosphere Disadvantages: expensive and can be busy at peak times
...become a member of the Fitness First in Dundee - it is even cheaper at around Ģ25 if you work in certain professions - council workers for example get the discount so check should you decide to join.
The gym is a bit out of the way (for me anyway) as it isn't central. There are various busses that will get you near it though and besides, your thinking of joining a gym - do the healthy thing and walk to it!
The gym isn't huge but makes good use ... ...also have access to other Fitness Studio gyms through-out the UK for mad people who want to go to the gym while on holiday. For those like me who find using exercise machines boring there are various classes running throughout the week including step, body combat, yoga and shotokan karate. The good news for those that like the odd class but wouldn't join the gym is that you can turn up and pay for a class if you are not a member - the Karate on Sunday ...
