Fresh start fitness for women has just opened in Glasgow city centre. Part of the fitness first empire, it is a woman only gym. The aim is to build a safe enviroment so that all women can find a sactuary away from stress, media images of the thin and beautiful and excercise with all the help and encouragement they need to feel good about themselves. Having finally shed my 3st 9lbs(yes thats right) with my national slimming club membership i decided to join a gym....as luck would have it one opened specially for me. (well not really but the timing was impecable) You join, have and induction where the staff show you how to work the machines, then you are ready to start. They do classes or you can go and use the machines (all except the nasty looking cellulite machine and sunbeds are included in your membership) There are also classes running at different times, including for the brave, a belly dancing class. Staff are always on hand to help, give advice and answer any questions. Alongside the gym they run pledge meetings which are aimed at helping you meet your goals. You can get weighed and be measured to record your sucess and they also give out prizes to those who meet their excercising goals. As most women well know the mere thought of this can put even the skinnies off. I can assure you that the staff are descrete and empethetic to your cause be it to increase fitness levels or shed the pounds. Past experience has taught me that this does give you the extra boost to meet your goals. The gym also boasts an aromatherapy steam room, the nicest changing room i have ever seen (with the world's biggest lockers) and seperate shower cubicles( I am a prood and proud). Obviously it is a gym and no amount of talking up will change that fact, but if you are female and want to join a gym (what ever your reason), you will feel very welcome and can even go in the old joggies and the tshirt you stole from your ex. If your still not convinced pop in and the girls will only be too happy to show you round.

I am a member of the London branch and would like to add that they are amazing. I used to weigh 19 stones and 8 pounds when i joined. with the help of people like Gaynor, fitness instructor, I now am heading towards 11 and a half sones and i am now down to a size 12. It is really nice to here these positive reviews on a facility that needs to be global for all. Thank you Fresh Start.

I once nervously went to a belly dancing class expecting exotic types only to find the teacher came from Kinning Park! (which you'll know if you're Glaswegian)

Haven't had the motivation to join the gym. Always thought a brisk walk from home to shop is sufficient exercise ... but maybe not in the cold ...
