I was a member of Fitness First Holloway for nearly two years until last December and had no problems whatsoever.
The location is easy to get to from either Finsbury Park or Holloway Road and there is a bus stop right outside. (The number 29 from Camden stops there).
It is open from 7 on weekdays and 8.30 at weekends. Mid afternoon onwards is the busiest time and can get overcrowded when people are finishing work. Seven Sisters Road which the gym is on is lively but full of litter from the market and not pleasant after dark.
The gym itself is well equipped for the monthly rate I was paying (36 quid and no signing on fee). There are rows or treadmills and bikes facing the televisions and there was always space. There is a seperate weights room and a small scale gym in the back. There is also a sauna, steam room and sun bed in the back and free lockers.
Near the front desk you can sit down and have a free drink and read the newspaper and all members can take out videos and dvds for one night free of charge. However, the selection is wide but poor.
There are loads of free classes suitable for everyone including kickboxing, step and spinning. They are usually full and the music is loud.
Students can normally get reduced rates and you should avoid paying a membership fee. They let me cancel my membership easily with a months' notice.
The staff were always pleasant but a lot of the other members used to treat the place like a social club and sit round and chat and hardly touch the equipment. (What's wrong with the pub?) There's a few friendly faces but I wouldn't call the place 'friendly'.
If you live nearby and are on a tight budget I would recommend this gym. However, if you are a bit more discerning, try the Holmes Place on the other side of Holloway Road.

ive got a local FF near me and was a member for all of three months til i decided to move. Was impressed at all. they're more bothered about advertising and marketing than the actual health and fitness of their customers!

Hmmm, can't say I was over impressed with my local FF in Birmingham. This one sounds a bit better... Chris x
