I purchased my own ball a few years ago and was using it religiously, however, I live in a small flat and it did take up alot of space. Also, being red in colour, it clashed with my decor a bit. It now happily resides deflated in a cupboard.
I would recomend a fitness ball. However, it may be a little advanced for those people who have limited or no exercise experience. Getting a fitness professional to demonstrate and check your technique and stability on the ball would be advisable before investing in one. Afterall, falling off it could be painful and embarrasing....

Advantages: Cheaper than others. Disadvantages: 2 floors below ground, poor condition and cleanliness
...I have been going to the gym for the past 4 years and have try different gym around birmingham. LA fitness Birmingham is the worst gym I have even been.
The outside of the gym give you an impression that it is very very small. However, the gym is actually 2 floors below ground and has a nice reception area.
I have transferred my gym member from Milton keynes to Birmingham due to work. Having just transferred on a Friday, the gym was closed for 3 days the following week due to flooding. I used the gym on the friday and find myself very disappointed with the condition and cleanliness of the gym.
The changing room was very small with little bench space for 3 people to change at the same time. The whole changing room had a strong smell of urine drifting from the toilet area and there were litter all over the floor. Considering...

Advantages: 5 min walk from office, small yet spacious Disadvantages: no swimming pool, can get busy between 12.45 and 2pm
...with a cycle and the other studio is used for gym classes, circuit training etc.
All in all my Fitness First is very friendly. The staff and personal trainers are very helpful and will talk you through anything if you are unsure.
I've only ever used this one gym and I find it a very pleasant atmosphere where you can get on with what you want and nobody looks at you like you are mad....
