I am a fly fisher. I enjoy it much more than coarse fishing which is featured on the site.It takes time in pleasure my hobby and I have devoted many years to it ever since I was 7, I was so eager to learn. Fly fishing I feel is a great hobby and people should take it up. Flies are crucially to the sport, seeing that is what the fish is attracted to and how you catch it.
  • The fly first of all must be suited to the fish that you are wishing to catch (e.g. a rainbow trout is more partial to the brown and green flies, the 'pheasant tails' and 'dampshels nypmh').
  • The type of water that you are fishing in (e.g. the clear waters of a well kept lake, the best colours would be white with black, white or yellow, the best fly for clear water would be the buzzer). On the other hand, the lakes that I am most fond of are the Lochs of bonnie Scotland (where I am from). For these kind of conditions, the water is normally acidic, due to the soil, therefore the fish will be feeding deep so an attractive fly will be needed, such as the Peter Ross, will is probably the best fly to fish in the whole of Scotland. It has a red body, with bits of silver, and feathers of black and white.
  • The line that you are using, for example, a sinking line you will have tto use a bright fly because your line will sink to the bottom, and at the bottom it gets quite murky, therefore silver and yellow work well, adn for some reason green. Floating lines, it doesn't really matter, just as llong as it immitates a fly, in it's movement etc.
  • The type of fly. There are two types of fly a). The Wet fly, which is used for 'bottom fishing' and also can be used on the surface, such flies are 'Peter Ross' 'Pheasant Tail' and 'The Zulu'. b). The dry fly. Which is used for only floating lines, these flies are designed to float, though if it begins to sink you can apply certain liquids whcih help it stay afloat. These flies are meant to be just like flies, like the Mayfly for instance. Such flies are 'Mayfly' and the 'Grey Wulf'

I hope that after reading this, you will be more knowledgable about the fly in fishing. Also when someone asks you about the subject, you can sound all intelligent about the types of fly for different waters and even their names.*It also helps to have spares of each fly. a).You may hook a fish which breaks the line, and takes your fly/hook with it (trust me it does happen)
b). When casting it may get stuck in trees behind you c). If you are using a sinking line remember not to forget about it and retrieve it before it gets stuck on the bottom of the lake.
