I'm the manager of an inline hockey team in the South of England. We've been using some very old goals with rotten and broken nets for many years. This has resulted in having to spend about an hour repairing the nets before every match. By the time a match or practice session has finished, the nets are ruined again. I managed to obtain a little sponsorship for our team and asked a local supplier to provide me with some goals and nets suitable for competitive match play - mark the last few words - COMPETITIVE MATCH PLAY - they're rather important. The goals cost me £190 including delivery, which seemed reasonable.
They were delivered to the Recreation Centre where we play. A couple of the players (one of which is my son) made the goals up one evening - unknown to me, they arrived completely dismantled in many separate parts, with the nets to be added as well. In fact, one of the nets was already damaged in two places and would have had to be sent back.
I first saw the goals at our practice session the following day. I couldn't believe my eyes. These were goals I had ordered to be used in competitive match play. If I had put these out both my own players and those of the other team would have laughed me off the rink! The goals are so lightweight that I fear they would break if a junior or senior player did as much as lean on them. Because they are constructed of so many parts that clip together, there is only limited rigidity, so much so that the whole assembly will easily move 2" from side to side under light pressure from a single finger..... Two of the tubes actually popped apart when my son accidentally knocked into them with his shoe.
I have now sent these goals back, incurring considerable cost and inconvenience. I am still without replacement goals for the new season, having wasted to weeks of my life on these dreadful things!
Now - here's the fair bit. These are what I would describe as "play" goals. For use by young kids with lightweight pucks or rubber balls. They are not suitable for competitive matchplay with full weight inline pucks. My guesstimate is that you would be lucky to last a single season using goals like this in a competitive league (and your reputation would suffer similarly).
The lesson? Do not buy lightweight goals if you are playing competitive matches. Find someone who can weld up goals for you!
