Koo-di Pack-it Rain Cover - kood-do better

Advantages: packs up small, light-weight
Disadvantages: not very sturdy, takes ages to attach

best to just have the covers on all the time with the window open, because if you do get caught in a shower, it takes so long to unpack the covers, shake them out and put them on the pram, that baby is going to get wet, regardless. I found that once I had the covers on, they were so baggy that even the slightest head-wind blew them inwards, and I was constantly worried about my baby not being able to breathe (mind you I am a very over-anxious parent). Not only that, but the window being held shut by only five tabs means the rain ends up getting in anyway. In the end I just stopped using it in favour of the rain-cover that came with the hood that I bought so I could use the Koo-di (there's an irony there). So thats about it - you need a hood for it to work, its probably better on a bigger pushchair, and probably better for an older child ...

Gary Fisher Nirvana excellent value in a hybrid

Advantages: Nimble, durable, versatile
Disadvantages: Gearing too low for speed on downhills

I purchased a Gary Fisher Nirvana as a deeply discounted "clearance" item in the late 1990s, and have used it for short commuting and longer weekend rides ever since. The cro-moly frame and fork have worked smoothly and held up well, the wheels have taken a pounding without distorting, and the gears are still functioning without flaw. The small frame accepted fenders, luggage rack, and other unstylish but useful add-ons. This hybrid bike has been nimble, easy to pedal, and durable. My criticisms -- the gearing range is too narrow to generate much speed going down hills and on flats. And the small diameter tires are somewhat inefficient for long distances on the road though ideal for mixed on road and off road use. Gary Fisher sold his company to Trek in the early 1990s, and I suspect that some of the models have been ...

Eating Chicken With the Governor of California

Advantages: good food, fast, free refills on soda
Disadvantages: small-ish portions

On my recent trip to Los Angeles, I was on the constant look-out for celebrities. I failed in terms of seeing any actors--unless you count those people who dress up as Austin Powers and Bat Man on Sunset Blvd. Little did I know that a very powerful man frequents a certain chicken chain... My friends and I were walking around a posh shopping area near the legendary Rodeo Drive. After stopping into the Wilshire Hotel (of 'Pretty Woman' fame) to use the toilet (a favourite travel activity, since I can't afford to actually stay in fancy hotels!), we wanted to get some inexpensive supper, which is not an easy thing to do in Beverly Hills. Dinny, my friend who lives in California, suggested Koo Koo Roo, which is basically an upscale alternative to fast food. It is mass-produced 'home-cooked' food that is a less greasy than Kentucky Fried ...
