I've been riding bikes for years and have always avoided wearing a helmet but I live in the centre of Glasgow and recently my flatmate has been wiped off his bike a couple of by gormless car drivers. Admittedly one was quite comical, he was passing a car and the little old lady didn't check her mirror when she swung her door open...

So this got me thinking, and seeing as my cycling is becomming more and more serious and have a lot of money invested in my bike I thought it time I invested some money in my head.

Giro are a very good, well known manufacturer of cycle helmets. Both for extreme off road stuff and simple leisure cycling. The company started in 1985 when a man named Jim Gentes created the first lightweight adult cycling helmet in his garage. Business boomed and soon he had to take over his next door neighbours garage too. He goes on to invent helmets that not only provide aerodynamic superiority but also help the cyclist by cooling the head and the patented Roc Loc fitting system. Some of the worlds most famous cyclists, in particular Lance Armstrong, all wear Giro helmets.

After a day of looking for a helmet I stumble upon the Giro Havoc helmet. I didn't want a shiny red and silver, or fluorescent green job - which most helmets seem to be - and the more muted colours such as matt grey all seemed to be out of my budget. However the Havoc did come in a matt gray finish and was within my £50 budget.

The helmet is very light, it weighs a mere 290 grams (10.5 oz) and has the Roc Loc 3 fitting system. This system allows the rider to adjust the size of the helmet to fit his or her head perfectly, it works much better than traditional toothed bands or clips. The Havoc comes in three sizes - small (51-55cm), medium (55-59cm) and large (59-63cm).

They are made by a process called in molding which fuses a very tough outer shell to the softer, light lining.

The Havoc has a peak which looks quite smart and can help block some of the sun (well, not in Glasgow) and rain that regularily beats down. It comes in 5 fetching colour schemes - red/titanium, matte black (I think it looks more grey then black), blue/silver, white/silver and purple/white. The purple and white model is part of the ladies colour range.

Fortunately I haven't gone head long into the concrete yet so I can't describe how well it performs when it comes down to the crunch however I can recommend this helmet on style, weight, comfort and price as I am very happy with my purchase. I have been assured by my flatmate, who also wears a Giro Havoc, that they do in fact work!

If you are a serious downhill rider, a cylcing commuter or just enjoy cycling at the weekend then I seriously recommend this helmet!!
