I have been a member at Greens Health & Fitness club in Stoke for around about three years now, as it is convenient for me to use and close enough to work to use at lunchtime. I was previously a member at Total Fitness Gym but left as the membership fees were getting too high.
Greens has a good gym, with decent quality cardio machines (we have treadmills, exercise bikes, cross trainers, rowing machines, step machines and what we call 'wave' machines which give a similar motion to skiing), a weight room, two rooms for organised classes and a room with spinning bikes. There is a 25 metre pool with three jacuzzi's, a sauna and steam room, as well as an infra red sauna cabin, loungers and showers around the pool area.
There is a large car park with plenty of space, with entrance and exit controlled by a barrier. This is useful as Stoke City Football Club is very close and fans try to use the car park on match days.
There is a bar in the club and big screen tv for sporting events, which may be more of a distraction I don't know. I've only ever been in once and it was a nice meal.
You are given a 'fob' when you join which is used to scan in and out of the gym, to lock and unlock your locker and exit the car park. This cost me £15 to buy and is now £30 to replace if you lose it.
The fees are currently £49 per month for unlimited use of the gym and not tied to a contract. If you commit to 12 months at the gym the monthly fee is reduced to £45. If you prefer the off peak plan, which restricts you to 9-5pm on weekdays and 8-close on weekends and bank holidays the fee is £34 per month. These are the so-called corporate rates which I currently qualify for. If you are over 55 there are further concessions.
That said, I wouldn't recommend Greens to any of my friends and family.
The reason being is that our Greens Gym has now been open for 11 years, and I feel that the standard has dropped somewhat in the three years that I have been a member.
The staff are ok, although I was told off when I joined because I didn't tell the personal trainer that I needed an induction and personal exercise plan. I was a little bit taken aback as I was the new member and HE should have told ME what the induction procedure was at the first meeting. I was also given a long and complicated personal plan which when I said I probably wouldn't have time to complete it all he said "so you haven't got time to spend an hour a day on exercise?"
Lockers are constantly broken, the showers are in desperate need of cosmetic repair as the walls are now nearly black with limescale and mould and it's hit and miss whether or not you get hot water. Vending machines break and take months to repair, as do the hand driers in the toilets. Every other week the jacuzzi's are out of action, and right now there is a notice on the changing room door stating that one of the boilers has broken so we will notice cold showers and the pool and jacuzzi's will be colder than normal. The sauna and steam room are very often 'out of order'.
I actually did recommend a friend to Greens several months ago under their 'Recommend a Friend and get £20' offer that is constantly running at the gym.
Unfortunately I was told that I wasn't eligible as the offer expires 60 days after the new member joins and because I hadn't gone to collect my £20 I couldn't have it. This would have been fine had there been ANY reference to this ridiculous rule on any of their literature or even had I been told this at any stage by a member of staff. After a very unhelpful conversation with a member of staff who basically said "I'm not passing the buck but it's probably your friends fault for not telling you that you need to request the reward" I compained to the manager and head office and was told that the £20 reward had been requisitioned and would be with me in 2 weeks. Eight weeks later I finally got the cheque. I would have probably given up earlier but since they had two new members paying £100 per month in fees I thought it was only fair that they honoured their promise.
After all that you're probably wondering why I'm still a member and it is mainly for two reasons
1) That it's £34 per month, which is a lot cheaper than other gyms in the area and I do try to use it at least four times per week in my lunch hour. The equipment is functional and it serves the purpose of exercising.
2) That it is a five minute trip from my workplace, which let's me fit in four visits per week in my lunch hour.
If you want a gym with decent equipment and a fairly cheap fee then Greens is not bad. I think it could stand to have some cosmetic upgrading and be a little more transparent about their referral reward scheme.
Advantages: Reasonably priced, plenty of free parking. Disadvantages: You have to pay for the whole year even if you leave.
My wife and I first joined Green's for the best of all reasons - they built it close to us. We had seen the advertising hoardings offering free memberships and so we visited the building site that would soon become the health and leisure centre itself and were impressed by the scale models that allowed us to see just what it would look like when it was finished.
The price of memberships looked good too. We opted for the off-peak tariff, as it suited ... ...I qualified for the corporate discount that saved me £10 a month. An unexpected bonus was that my wife also qualified for the discount just because she was married to me! so another tenner saved there then. All in all we ended up paying £25 a month each, which compared to the cost for other gyms in Leicester, seemed reasonable. This has since gone up to £31 but more equipment has been provided in the weights room. We also opted to enrol the kids ...

Advantages: Spacious, comfortable, friendly well equipped gym. Disadvantages: Oh dear, it has a bar!
I joined Greens having recently changed job, with a Greens Fitness Centre located opposite my new office. Joining seemed a good alternative to a daily stop at Subway for a sandwich and i promptly inquired about fees, facilities and opening hours.
I was offered a couple of packages, one of which was the off peak annual membership i purchased. I think, but i'm not a 100% sure that I got a corporate discount.
FEES
Off peak member ship cost £35 a ... ...even after the first session. GREENS ARE THE ONLY PLACE IN THE NORTH EAST TO OFFER THIS! Trial sessions cost £15. The package, which you must buy in full, consisting of 12 sessions costs £300.
I tried a trial session and they set me off exercising on a treadmill at a moderate pace. Its really sweaty work even though its not actually that hard to do. Apparently because they suck the air out its the equivalent to working 2000ft under the sea. I did ...

Advantages: Well equipped and tidy gym Disadvantages: staff are rude and treat customers poorly. They are just a gang of bullies.
...by a member of the Greens team. When I reported this problem my concerns were not really taken seriously and I felt the manager doubted my concerns. Oh well, if they treat too many people like this I guess Greens will end up no more. Avoid this place at all costs, there are much better and friendlier gyms in the area where you will be treated with respect by the staff. Esporta may be a bit more expensive but certainly worth the extra money. ...

Advantages: Safe, Friendly, Modern Place To Get Fit Disadvantages: Some may find it expensive
...decided to move on.
Greens is part of the De-vere group of hotels, they now have several health clubs throughout the UK and are expanding everyday.
This club has everything you could possibly want in a health club.
Fully equipped CV room complete with treadmills, bikes, steppers & cross trainers, all liked to six wide (and I mean wide) screen TV's showing all the regular channels plus there is a selection of the popular radio channels, all accessed ... ...these are basically cheaper but with restrictions on the time of day you can go.
So, to sum up, if you want to get fit, make friends & relax then greens is for you, you will soon forget about the £52 per month when you feel & look better. ...

Advantages: Great facilities . Has everything you could possibly want from a gym Disadvantages: the staff
...a long standing member, of greens have I been sadly dispappointed in their management. The general manager at the croydon branch is rude and aggresive without any considerations for the people who actually pay his salary - the members. He decided last week to ban my whole family as one of our guests took a drink from the bar not knowing he wasn't supposed to . When I told him it would be stealing, he left the drink unopened at the bar. I didn't touch ... ..., he now manages at greens and continues to enforce his own 'jump to conclusions policy ' without thought for his members. If ever there is an award on how NOT to manage this guy should would win hands down. Greens itself is great . Shame about the people working there! ...

Advantages: good facilities Disadvantages: expensive and far too busy, when I went at least
not at all bad. Choices include jacket potatoes, Thai green curry and numerous salads. For a health club they?re not too rigid and there are fizzy drinks available, but far more tempting was their range on healthy-without-suffering-for-it fresh fruit juices. They are blended as you wait and you can have a wild and wonderful combination of berries and tropical treats from pineapple and mango to melon and nectarine. I tried melon and clementine juice which was liquid heaven.
I leafed through some glossy Sunday supplements and quite randomly, though this is West London so perhaps not surprising, a pile of Australian women?s magazines. Then I decided that as pleasant as this was I should do some exercise as this was supposed to be the point of dragging myself out of my nice warm lounge on this rainy Sunday afternoon.
