Holmes Place/Virgin Active still a great gym
Review of Virgin Active Fitness Club, Edinburgh by
MikeJones84
Advantages: large gym space, friendly staff
Disadvantages: bagel factory
...seeing the previous review regarding Virgin Actives policies towards towels I thought I should attempt to set the record straight from my perspective.
Holmes Place/Virgin Active in my opinion is still a great club and throughout the transition of the takeover have continued to be helpful and approachable when I've questioned any new policies. The staff are extremely friendly and I find the atmosphere of the whole club as enjoyable as ever.
In regards ... ...this by investing £3 billion into environmental research. Being asked to cut back on towels seems the least we can do for the problems we ourselves cause. Under Virgin I hope that the gym continues the high standards it inherited from Holmes Place and so far so good. ...

A family friendy Health club
Review of David Lloyd Clubs, Edinburgh by
Groovee
Advantages: Family friendly, plenty to do
Disadvantages: Can be busy at certain times
...January 2001, my friend joined David Lloyd which had recently been built and opened in Gyle Park on the West of Edinburgh situated between Corstorphine and the Gyle! In July 2001 we noticed and offer in teh paper for a £50 joining fee so we phoned and arranged a look round!
We were impressed! A large car park with plenty of spaces and also from the outside the building looked clean and welcoming! The staff were very helpful on the front desk and ... ...back there. David Lloyd also have a function suite which is just off reception. They have a extremely large hall which can be shuttered off into 2 smaller rooms. We recently held a naming ceremony here and it was well worth the £500 we paid for it. The staff were great about keeping us informed about everything and the buffet was great too.
If you are in Edinburgh and live nearby you should check this club out. I can assure you that you will not ...

Where fitness is elementary...
Review of Holmes Place, Edinburgh by
ShoppingGirl
Advantages: It's massive, luxurious, and easy to get to.
Disadvantages: Costs £59 a month!!!
...business hots up. Holmes Place is an established chain, and their brand spanking new Edinburgh club is the biggest gym in all Scotland!! I was lucky/ gullible enough (delete as per your opinion!) to sign up for this place before it opened, at the bargain joining fee of £20.
Bear in mind it’s £59 a month membership after that though! It isn’t a cheap option in anybody’s language but as a regular gym bunny I know I will get my money’s worth.
I’ll ... ...UPDATE *** UPDATE ***
Holmes Place continue to impress me with their commitment to customer service. They send out a monthly newsletter, updating members on changes and improvements, and seem keen to listen and respond to our concerns. The timetable has been dramatically expanded with an average of 15 classes per day! Add to this the fact that they are doing a whopping big weeks worth of fundraising for Comic Relief - and you see why I'm impressed.

Esporta Number
Review of Esporta Club, Edinburgh by
gshughes
Advantages: well appointed, nice clean facilities
Disadvantages: lack of free weights, price
...the shower.
In summary Esporta is very nice and well equipped, however at around £50 plus joining fee it is also expensive. What it offers over my existing gym, is cleaner, flasher surroundings, with sauna, steam room and spa, however the free weights facilities are not as good, and since it is about 3x more expensive, I don't think I'll be joining. ...

FITNESS FIRST - APPARENTLY
Review of Fitness First, Edinburgh by
JILLAMEENA
Advantages: NONE
Disadvantages: WASTE OF £39
I found out about fitness first when I was searching the Internet for fitness clubs in my area. The club sounded really good, as well as the gym they ran fitness classes including Pilates and Yoga, had a Spa area and a members only video club. They were offering a free day to one of their fitness clubs, so I thought 'why not' and registered my details. A few days later I was called by the Edinburgh Club and asked if I would like to make an appointment ... ...bully me into joining (Which there was absolutely no chance of).
Fitness First's logo is that they bring fitness at an affordable price, I don't think so, for £39 a month you don't get much for your money, it's worth paying a few pound extra to join a decent gym. ...
