I'm sorta off Esporta
Advantages: Great equipment, good range of classes Disadvantages: Expensive, impersonal, membership administration
I joined Esporta because I wanted a gym that would let me use its clubs all over the country, as I was doing a lot of travelling at the time. So Esportas Freeway membership seemed like a good idea. They have clubs all over the country which you can use at no extra cost and they're in nearly every big city. Gloucester was my 'home' club.
The gym is spacious and the equipment is all top-of-the-range. They seem to have just about everything, steppers, ... ...There's also cardio theatre so you can workout whilst watching the tv and listening on headphones. They have about 6 different channels such as MTV, Sky One, Sky News, Sky Sports, ITV, BBC1. Very good if you like to watch Eastenders and get a workout. You can also get a programme set up for you by the staff that means when you enter your pin number into one of the cardio machines it tells you how long / how hard you should be working. It also keeps ...

The Peak of Fitness
Advantages: Good classes, excellent customer service Disadvantages: No pool
I joined Peak Fitness after my not-so-brilliant experiences with the Gloucester Esporta (see other op). Peak Fitness is about 5 minutes from our new house, and had been reccomended to me by several people at work. So, shortly after Christmas I decided i'd better wear off all that turkey and mince pies and join the gym.
**Who are they**
Peak Fitness is a chain club, but a lot smaller than the likes of Esporta and Fitness First. They have gyms in ... ...to get used up at peak times. The machines are quite tightly packed in, but they are sensibly arranged in lines so you can get between them easily enough (well, depending on excess pork-pie consumption I suppose). It's also air-conditioned, not that it stops me going fire-engine red when running though!
There's cardio theatre so you can workout whilst watching the tv or listening to the radio on headphones. There's no way I would join a gym without ...

a disgrace
Advantages: its cheep Disadvantages: staff are unhelpful, violent and abusive. the management don't care
in my opinion you should never go anyware near this gym. the facilities suck and the staff are very abusive and unhelpful. i seen a disabled person being attacked and no one helped him. member of staff who hit the disabled man still works there. in my opinion, the staff are violent and the managemet just turn a blind eye to this.
i found the gym very dirty and unhygenic, there was mould growng on the tiles in the shower area and outside the sauna.

OUGHT TO HAVE A WEALTH WARNING
Advantages: Good tennis Disadvantages: Personally witnessing a long-standing member being refused entry.
OUGHT TO HAVE A WEALTH WARNING: The club appears to tie the members into very long contracts (currently, I believe 12 months notice) and this year when my membership was due for renewal the club did not adhere to their own contract with regards to price increases, 14a & 14b of the contract in particular. The office staff, in charge of Membership Relations, I found to be rather dishonest! I personally experienced some very unethical tricks when negotiating ... ...who she is, will even insist that she does not receive emails as official notice of resignation or retraction, depending on what benefits her, of course. I have also personally witnessed a long-standing member being refused entry to the club only 2 days after his payment ran out. How ruthless!
Be careful! ...

Don't join
Advantages: None Disadvantages: Facilities
...has meant that companies like LA Fitness continue to operate when they ought to shrivel up and dissappear. This club is awful! Showers are closed, though if you were to go inside them you would find broken floor tiles and a leaking roof. The exercise studio features a leaking roof and lots of 'feature' puddles that gym instrutors need to warn of, just in case a member falls. The club is like an unwanted puppy - neglected, tired and in need of some ... ...complete the much promised £1m refurbishment as its unusable at present. It's a shame as I have been a member for many years and used to love it - a really friendly and and intimate club, which under the 'new' ownership of LA Fitness has been run into the ground. ...
