Holmes Place/Virgin Active still a great gym
Review of Virgin Active Fitness Club, Edinburgh by MikeJones84

Advantages: large gym space, friendly staff
Disadvantages: bagel factory

...seeing the previous review regarding Virgin Actives policies towards towels I thought I should attempt to set the record straight from my perspective. Holmes Place/Virgin Active in my opinion is still a great club and throughout the transition of the takeover have continued to be helpful and approachable when I've questioned any new policies. The staff are extremely friendly and I find the atmosphere of the whole club as enjoyable as ever. In regards ...
...this by investing £3 billion into environmental research. Being asked to cut back on towels seems the least we can do for the problems we ourselves cause. Under Virgin I hope that the gym continues the high standards it inherited from Holmes Place and so far so good. ... Read review

Consumer Warning! Don't join Fitness First
Review of Fitness First, Glasgow by Hansunahnah

Advantages: Clean gym
Disadvantages: Awful awful customer service. PLEASE READ!

When I first joined Fitness First For Women, I thought I had found everything I wanted in a gym. And never had any problems with the club itself. But being a student, one is always looking for cheaper, better value for money options. When I found out the University Gym was only £30 a YEAR with a swimming pool and free classes, I decided to leave Fitness First. I received no letter confirming that my membership had been cancelled after writing to ...
...Debt Recovery Agency working for Fitness First has sent me a letter demanding £181!!!! Absolutely raging I called Fitness First to ask if this was a mistake. They checked on the computer and assured me it was. And I could just ignore it. This time taking no chances, my mother called the Debt Recovery Agency for me (I had lectures). They were extremely rude and unprofessional. Telling my mum to "shut up" and that they were "coming for their money". ... Read review

best gym I have ever been to
Review of Fitness First, Dundee by wailywaily

Advantages: excellent equipment
Disadvantages: price

...centres in the area and Fitness First seems to be the best one so far. I suppose it helps that I haven´t had to pay yet, as I have always gone with free vouchers I have won on an Internet lotto, or on their free trial weekends. I think there are different levels of membership according to peak and off-peak usage, and the top membership fee was more than 30 pounds per month last time I checked, so if there is two of you it can become quite expensive, ...
...a couple of hours there everyday. And we can´t forget there is a joining fee, which covers for administration costs and you usually get a sports bag, a towel, headphones for the machines, so you can listen to the radio/tv while you are working and something else. It´s not in the town centre so you cannot go during your lunch hour if you want to spend your break from work in the gym. It seems to be quite small, but I have never had problems with ... A family friendy Health club
Review of David Lloyd Clubs, Edinburgh by Groovee

Advantages: Family friendly, plenty to do
Disadvantages: Can be busy at certain times

...January 2001, my friend joined David Lloyd which had recently been built and opened in Gyle Park on the West of Edinburgh situated between Corstorphine and the Gyle! In July 2001 we noticed and offer in teh paper for a £50 joining fee so we phoned and arranged a look round! We were impressed! A large car park with plenty of spaces and also from the outside the building looked clean and welcoming! The staff were very helpful on the front desk and ...
...back there. David Lloyd also have a function suite which is just off reception. They have a extremely large hall which can be shuttered off into 2 smaller rooms. We recently held a naming ceremony here and it was well worth the £500 we paid for it. The staff were great about keeping us informed about everything and the buffet was great too. If you are in Edinburgh and live nearby you should check this club out. I can assure you that you will not ... Read review

Where fitness is elementary...
Review of Holmes Place, Edinburgh by ShoppingGirl

Advantages: It's massive, luxurious, and easy to get to.
Disadvantages: Costs £59 a month!!!

...business hots up. Holmes Place is an established chain, and their brand spanking new Edinburgh club is the biggest gym in all Scotland!! I was lucky/ gullible enough (delete as per your opinion!) to sign up for this place before it opened, at the bargain joining fee of £20. Bear in mind it’s £59 a month membership after that though! It isn’t a cheap option in anybody’s language but as a regular gym bunny I know I will get my money’s worth. I’ll ...
...UPDATE *** UPDATE *** Holmes Place continue to impress me with their commitment to customer service. They send out a monthly newsletter, updating members on changes and improvements, and seem keen to listen and respond to our concerns. The timetable has been dramatically expanded with an average of 15 classes per day! Add to this the fact that they are doing a whopping big weeks worth of fundraising for Comic Relief - and you see why I'm impressed. ... Read review
