Due to the fact that I ride several horses, I do own several pairs of jodphurs. I must be honest and admit that I do ride in jeans but these need to be thin and stretchy preferably. Jodphurs are made specifically with horse riding in mind for comfort and durability, so why do I keep wearing jeans?! I tend to wear what is comfortable and functional. Horse riding does create patches of wear and I have recently invested in several new pairs of jodphurs. I am going to endeavour to wear these from now on. instead of jeans.
Harry Hall. * * * * * * * *
Harry Hall is a well respected equestrian company. They manufacture jodphurs, jackets and riding hats. I have a hat by them and have had several pairs of jodphurs in the past. I have always found their products hard wearing, reasonably priced and smart and functional. I have bought several pairs of jodphurs from them which I have found have lasted a while and I know they always fit me. I usually buy on line for convinience and lower prices, so it is always useful to know of a reliable brand that fits me.
Harry Hall ladies Memphis Jodphurs are available in navy and beige. There is not a vast colour selection, but then a choice between light and dark is good enough. The jodphurs are priced at around £17.99 which is reasonable. They are designed with summer riding in mind as they are lightweight. The material is 96% cotton and 4% spandex meaning that they are cool as well as providing stretch in the material. The jodphurs are low rise and are secured by a drawstring at the waist. They have self knee patches.
Available in ladies sizes small, medium and large, they should hopefully suit most riders. They are also available in childrens sizes. I have not seen them in mens, but that doesn`t mean to say that they don`t do them. The lengths are regular and long.
Advantages. * * * * * * * * *
The jodphurs are comfortable and fit without being too tight. This is a feature of most jodphurs, provided by the stretch in the material. It is not so stretchy however that they are too loose.
The self knee patches are smart and provide comfort to the knee, a place that is receiving extra pressure due to being one of the places of grip. Again, these are present on most jodphurs.
The jodphurs are easy to put on and take off. They are low rise (not particularly low though) and the drawstring makes them quick and easy.
They are perfect for summer as they are not too hot. They are cool without being flimsy.
Disadvantages. * * * * * * * * * * * *
I prefer a zip and clip fastening on jodphurs as it makes them feel a bit more secure. Whilst these are not going to fall down, I always feel that the fit is not as perfect as it could be.
The sizes are a bit limiting. Small, medium and large , whilst I think in tops these sizings are alright, they are not in jodphurs. When I buy Harry Hall, I buy them in my waist size and they fit perfectly. Waist sizes go up in two inch intervals and there are more than three different sizes. The adjustment is in the drawstring. I just prefer waist sizes because they fit all over, rather than just being pulled in at the waist, by that I mean the waist and hip and thigh sizes are all calculated. WIth small, medium and large they may be slightly too big or slighlty too small, fitting just around the waist by the drawstring.
A few more colour options would be nice, or at least black.
Do I recommend? * * * * * * * * * * * * * *
I do recommend these jodphurs because the positives outweigh the negatives. They are reasonably cheap which is important as horses cost a lot of money. They are great for summer and are comfortable. I would recommend them for hacking but not really fast work or competition. I buy a lot of Harry Hall products and will continue to do so, these being quite good but not my favourites.
