We have had our Hilleberg Nalo 2 GT since 2002 so feel able to write review of it after several years of use. It has been around the world with us and is every bit as good now as it was on its first use.
At the time of buying it, we had never heard of Swedish manufacturer Hilleberg until we were introduced to the Nalo GT at tent show. We were looking for a lightweight tent to replace our North Face starburst and fell in love with the Nalo. The living space is huge for a 2 man tent. You could squeeze 3 people into the sleeping area at a push and the vestible space offers loads of room for gear (even a bike if you are touring).
It is hard to believe that such a spacious tent weighs only 2.4kg. That is thanks to the superlight 9mm poles and Kerlon 1200 fabric that Hilleberg use for their tents. The fabric is so thin that we wondered whether it would last but it has been superb. Not even a tiny little rip in all its use. Send off for a Hilleberg catalogue (www.hilleberg.se) and they will include a sample of the Kerlon fabric so you can try and tear it for yourself. Impossible! It's a bit fatter (but shorter) when all rolled up that our last tent but this hasn't ever caused a problem.
It is a 4 season tent and has never let us down. It can be pitched using just 4 pegs and goes up in one (inner and flysheet together). There are plenty of extra pegging points and guy ropes should you need them.
It is very easy to put up and you can detach the inner from the outer if desired. This is useful if you are doing a day hike in bad weather and want to carry the outer and poles to create a lightweight shelter to eat lunch in! You can also put the inner up on its own (for sleeping in tropical areas) but you need to buy 4 special pole holders to make the poles fit. These can be bought from Hilleberg for 10 EUROS (set of 4) which is quite reasonable). Other extras include footprints which can add a floor to the vestible and an extra layer under the inner floor for protection.
Ventilation is excellent. We have never had a problem with condensation in the tent and it has been used in all weathers and climates.
We have had it in several inches of rain (and snow!) and nothing has come in through the floor or the seems. Unbelievable.Should the weather get truly awful and you need to cook inside the tent, you can push the inner right back to have a huge porch for cooking.
Storage facilities are good. There are gear pockets on each side of the inner and a washing-line on the top of the inner. The carry bag is lightweight like the tent and the pole bag has been cleverly designed so that the poles tuck in and can't accidently fall out.
We chose the GT over the regular Nalo as it has the extended vestibule which is useful for storing gear. (The GT is shown in the picture here). If you wanted to cut down on weight even further, the regular nalo has a smaller, sloped vestible and is a bit lighter.
At around £400 it is not the cheapest tent on the market but we have been so pleased with it and believe it offers excellent value for money. The last tent we owned cost almost £300 and only lasted 4 years. This has lasted 4 already and is still in super condition. Field and Trek (www.fieldandtrek.com) sell this tent and often have promotions for 20% off so worth paying them a visit if you're thinking of buying one.
Should this tent every die on us (seems unlikely!) we would have no hesitation in buying another.
