Having just moved to London from fitness crazy New York, I decided I could not live without my (almost) daily gym fix. So I went to check out HP which is the closest to where I live.
I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised. They gave me a tour on the spot, then one of their sales guys sat down with me and explained the different options to me. Basically, you can have a normal membership (about £400 to join and about £75 per month). There is also a discounted option (about 25% less), but you can only use the facilities before 5pm and not on weekends. I guess that only works for people who don't work regular hours.
Ok, so there was a bit of a hard sell as they offered me £100 off if I joined that same day. I fell for it, but I don't regret it as my experience has been very good so far (2 months later).
First, you get a private lesson (free) with one of their trainers to show you how all the machines work and to set up your personal program. They will reevaluate your progress (if you want) 4 weeks later, again for free.
Second, the equipment is pretty good. There are two cardio areas, one co-ed and one for women only. My only complaint is that there is not a lot of space, and the air condition doesn't quite cope, especially during peak times. Then there are two weight areas, again one mixed and one for women. Same issue, there is a lack of space so you always have to be careful not to hit the next person in the face with a dumbbell.
They also have a 20 metre pool that is pleasantly warm (28 degrees), which I like a lot. Both the mens and the womens' changing areas have a steam room and sauna so you can relax after working out. They also have lots of classes, e.g. yoga, pilates, bodypump etc. during the day and on weekends, but I have to admit I have not been to a single one yet. However, I have been going about 4 times a week for other exercise.
Finally, there is a very nice lounge with a cafe that serves healthy (but pricey) food, and has all the daily papers for your consumption. There is also a beauty center, and a tanning area, which charge extra. The staff everywhere are very friendly and approachable, and not at all intimidating.
Overall, I highly recommend it as a way to destress, detoxify and get your balance. It is expensive, but at least the price makes you feel so guilty that you can't afford not to go ;)
