Manufacturer's product description
Hope Bottom Bracket - Stainless Steel Bearing Features: The eagerly anticipated external bottom bracket is now available, with two different bearing options. All common systems are covered with this upgrade unit - making it ideal for Shimano, Race Face, FSA and others. The machined aluminium cups hold either full stainless steel cartridge bearings, or ceramic bearings in stainless races. These custom, Swiss made bearings are double sealed, fully serviceable and removable which give much greater life span than stock units. The bearings are made (as all our bearings are) by INA and have been designed to run directly on the crankset axle, without the use of shims or spacers - again increasing life and reliability. We use a non contact, free running labyrinth seal to protect the bearing externally, and the machined aluminium centre tube is sealed internally with o-rings. The unit is suitable for 68 & 73mm shell width\'s - with aftermarket 83mm tube\'s available where required. A road specific unit will follow. Standard 6 colours are available on cups - red, blue, silver, black, gold and gunmetal, with the centre tubes being black on the stainless and gunsmoke on the ceramic.
...I have had three or four of these because they were cheap, it turned out that in the long run it was cheaper to save up and buy a decent bottombracket. Everyone of these that I bought broke in under a month, the same two faults occured each time. 1) Mud and grit easily get past the seals and wear out the bearings causing them to cease or rattle. 2) The ends of the tapered arms round off very easily, even during light XC and commuting use I have rounded them off. Steer clear and buy a decent bottombracket, or even better get the new external type, or if your into jumping and DH get some 3piece cranks....

...Before I go and review a bottombracket, it might be worthwhile if I explained to everyone what exactly a bottombracket is. Let's start at the pedals. The pedals are attached to the cranks, the cranks are then attached to a spindle that goes through the bike frame. This spindle and the bearings that surround it form the bottombracket. As you may have guessed, it's not a very exciting thing to write about, so my apologies in advance for a very dull opinion.
There's two times that anyone is likely to come into contact with a bottombracket, if you're building up your bike from parts, or if there's a nasty grindy noise when you pedal and you need a new bottombracket. In this case, many people will take their bike to a shop to get it looked at as although changing a bottombracket is easy enough, it requires a few specialised...

Advantages: Light, Strong, twice as strong as competitors, isis Disadvantages: non
...The Evolve Series of BottomBracket from Race Face Have an amazing Spec for the Price, There Retailing at Around £45 for something that is twice as strong as the competitors.
When I say Twice as strong this is because the The whole case has been shot penned to harden it and There are two sets of bearings in the drive side of the bottombracket to allow for great strain to be put on it, as your drive side takes the power to the chain. Plus a few other tricks to make it the strongest BB on the Market.
This makes it ideal for trials as the bash ring, when used pushes a lot of force onto the drive side arm of the bottombracket, causing pits in bearings in most BB. Race face have gone a step further though as the bearing have been bought in and disassembled and the grease replaced with there own mix that is said to increase the life...
