...In a bid to lose a few pounds after uni (too much alcohol & too many takeaways) I was looking for a good all round exercise machine, and elliptical trainers were recommended by some friends.
"Why?" I enquired.
"The answer is simple" came the reply, "they are a great cardiovascular work out and the pedals mimic the body's natural movements when running, so essentially you are running, but there is no impact - saving your joints and bones!"

After looking at a variety of makes and models, I decided upon the York 3100 Elliptical Trainer & Cycle. It looked the sturdiest, could handle the most maximum weight (16 stone - not that I was this large, but obviously the larger the maximum weight, the stronger the machine), was from a brand that I had heard of and trusted...

Advantages: Solid Feel / Price Disadvantages: Could use more hi-tech gadgets
...Regarding the basics, the Horizon Ti 22 is quiet and has a solid feel. The LED monitor has a variety of settings and modes that allow me to adjust my workout.
The width of the unit is comfortable, so I don't feel as if I'm going to tip over or stumble when I walk.
The most important aspect to the entire unit is its solid feel. I weight 180 pounds, and when I run, I didn't want a machine that bounced, which will increase stress on knees. This unit provides the support I need to feel safe running even at speeds of a 7-minute mile.
The cup holder is pretty basic, and I would have rated it excellent if it had a dvd player like some of the others I looked at, but for the price, you can't go wrong.
Overall, if you're looking for solid build, reasonable price, and if you can forego some of the more expensive gadgets...
