...Booking accommodation for the Christmas period is always tough. Ditto booking accommodation on a strict budget, booking accommodation when there are a few of you, and booking accommodation in a specific location with specific features. These were all issues when we booked our accommodation for our Christmas stay in Byron Bay, and even though we booked what we thought was well in advance (early October), our choices were limited. For this reason we went with the first hostel that could fit us in - the Backpackers Inn on the Beach - and booked for the 4 of us to stay 4 nights.
When we booked we were told they couldn't guarantee we'd all be in the same room, which seemed a bit strange since there were 4 of us, and many of their rooms sleep 4, but when we arrived they happily gave us a room to ourselves. Dorms and private rooms are...

Advantages: A beautiful clean beach with something for everyone! Disadvantages: It's so far away!!
...shops for all your needs from beachwear and inflatables to newspapers, juice and snacks. There is also a really good choice of restaurants from the more expensive, full meal restaurants to the more affordable family orientated snack bars. All restaurants and shops are covered by canopies, which is really pleasant during the day, giving you a chance to escape from the sun for a while whilst enjoying the cooling breeze rolling in from the sea. We also ate in a couple of the restaurants in the evening and again this was very pleasant as the canopies were pulled back once the sun had set and the breeze rolling in from the sea was wonderful. The view of the evening sun setting over the beach was truly breathtaking and unforgettable.

...If you have young children, you most likely know who Dora the Explorer is and all about her talking backpack. This game is on a DVD format, so your child will need a DVD drive on the computer they play it on. This means, if like us, you tarted up a Freecycled PC so your child can leave YOUR PC alone, you will need to fork out a few quid for a DVD player for it.
This game is a natural extension of the TV series it is spun off from. The TV series has a computer game feel, with the "mouse cursor" that appears on the screen after Dora asks your child a question, so this game is like suddenly actually being IN the show for your child. Like the series, your child will go on a walk (in this to the library) with Dora and her backpack, and along the way, meets up with Boots, Benny the bull, Tico the squirrel, and others.
