Disadvantages: you have to put the effort in, it's not a magic cure

...don't have to remember to set the time, your weight, effort level etc into each machine - it sets it up automatically for you according to what your instructor thinks you should be doing. You can go off-plan and do your own thing too. The key records everything you do in the gym, and when you check out at the end of your session it loads it all into the main monitor and you can bring up little graphs that show you if you're hitting your targets for distance, calories, strength etc. I find this really motivating as it means I can see evidence of my increasing fitness, and it helps you stay on the stepper for those last two minutes because you don't want to fall short of your bar chart target, whereas otherwise it would be easy to get off the machine and conveniently forget that you didn't finish the programme for the day. Advantages: Loads of machines.

....L's also offer coaching for adults as well as children and have colour coded tennis classes - beginners have a large racket and large ball, Intermediate the racket and ball get slightly smaller and so on, until they can play 'real tennis'. Some of them are so good it makes you want to spit. Machines & Stuff:- The fitness area is huge, has a number of TV's tuned to all the 1-5 channels, plus Sky sports and Sky movies. There are huge numbers of cross trainers, treadmills, upright excercise bikes, a few rowing machine, several step machines and two bizarre machines that are like bikes for your arms which I cannot see the point of. Each of these machines has a small purple and silver box attached and if you take a set of headphones, you can plug in, select channels 1-12, turn up the volume and pound away. ...I joined LA Fitness in Lincoln early January this year (2003) and although I have now only been a member for almost a month, I will gladly sing their praises! It was the typical new year resolution - to lose some weight - and after a final push by my partner I made an appointment and went with a friend to find out about the facilities. The sales advisor (which is really what they are) gave a very good comprehensive tour of the whole complex and not one question went unanswered, anything we needed to know was told to us. After the tour, we were sat down in the comfortable reception area (with coffee shop) and went over all the details of membership and what we needed to do if we were interested. To be honest we couldn't say no. We joined on the silver membership for a years contract at £42 a month. This did seem rather pricey at first... Read review
