This is a completely new model by Khyam for this season which resembles some of the highly successful steel poled tunnel tents produced by Outwell. This is a seriously large tent with overall dimensions being 700x410cm and is able to sleep a whopping 12 people. Even when all of the inners are up, the living space will measure 360x250cm and of course this can be increased by not utilizing all of the inners. The groundsheet is also fully sewn-in preventing drafts and the risk of water seepage. The main door has a useful porch/vestibule area and there is a second canopy style door on the opposite side of the living area. There are also large canopied windows/vents on each side of the living space. The flysheet is made from Weatherweave 5000mm hydrostatic head polyester with fully taped seams; the inner tents are breathable polyester and the groundsheet is polyethylene. Other details include multiple storage pockets and an electrical inlet point. Supplied in two sturdy carry bags for the poles and flysheet.
Advantages: Size, waterproof - quick to erect for size - smaller to carry/load compaired to others. Disadvantages: Pole ropes dodgy(?), tricky to shut zip without adjusting pegs, need to tether v. well.
...This is our second Khyamtent as we loved the quick-erect system.
Generally we are pleased with it due to its size (family of four) - if the weather is rainy there is plenty of room. We used it last summer when the floods happened and it was also quite windy. It witheld the rain excellently - it is highly rainproof - another reason why we bought it.
On the negative side we have had the inner cables (ropes) go twice on the main poles. You can fix these fairly easily and Khyam replaced the ropes with no hassle and no expense but I query if there is a weakness here. It can also be quite tricky to set up perfectly to ensure the zip closes on the front door again due to its size - this gets easier with practise.
The only other comment is that when we used it in some quite high winds (floods again!) you need to tether it very well...

Advantages: Lightweight, spacious, well made Disadvantages: fiddly to put up
...tents, which have the advantage of being easier to put up and are very durable and weather resistant.
Without further hesitation we all piled into the MPV and headed off to Sheffield to explore ‘CCC Outdoor Centre’s’ display of tents. They have a wide range of tents set up on the 1st floor ranging from the Khyam self erecting tent to tiny one pole bivvy tents and quite a few in between. We browsed around checking for features that would suit our requirements; we looked at weight, quality of construction and sleeping arrangements. Eventually we settled on the Vango TBS Equinox 600, a hoop or tunnel design 3/4-season tent that sleeps 6 people (in theory). We figured that we might as well stick to Vango as we knew that their tents were reliable and the customer support is also good.
Vango is actually an anagram of Govan, a Scottish...

Advantages: Easy to erect, large, simple construction Disadvantages: Heavy to Carry
...The Madrid is what is known as a 'tunnel' tent. This basically means that it is tunnel shaped, with an entrance at one end and 2 bedrooms at the other. The front door can be zipped out completely, leaving a gaping mouthed tunnel, or part of it can be rolled back and tied to one side, leaving a smaller, yet still fairly large gaping hole.
SIZE
The main attraction of this tent to ourselves was the overall size. As it's name suggests this is a 5 man deluxe tent so there is plenty of space for a couple. There are 2 bedroom areas, one which we use as the master bedroom that should sleep 3 people, and another that we use as a wardrobe/changing area that sleeps 2 people. Personally I wouldn't recommend that 5 adults go away for any length of time in this tent, unless you were very good friends and regularly slept together in very close quarters...
