I am a ciao review virgin but Bubbles and I were so impressed with the result that we wanted to share our enthusiasm for this product with other ponies and owners.

My grandchildren's Shetland pony started having problems last summer at the age of 13. Unlucky certainly, as the irritation was driving her crazy and she was rubbing on anything she could find until her skin bled. We ended up having to keep her in most of the summer: none of the usual fly sprays worked and she was continually getting bitten by the midges. (This condition is thought to be an allergic reaction to midge bites).

A vet suggested feeding her a herbal supplement called D-Itch throughout the winter to boost her immune system and stop the allergic reaction to the bites. This we did. It smelled delicious and she loved it, but then she loves her food anyway. However it did not really help once she was out at grass again in the spring. Soon the irritation and resulting lesions and bald patches appeared again.

I searched for a remedy on a certain well known auction site and came upon Killitch. There were three or four people supplying it and I chose the cheapest. It cost £15.50 with postage of £2.99. For the first couple of weeks there did not seem to be much difference, but by the third week the sores were getting smaller and smaller and the hair was growing back. In the beginning she objected to being treated but gradually realised that it was doing her good and stood meekly until we had finished applying it.

After about a month I ordered another bottle. A week after starting this bottle the sores are practically invisible with the hair grown again down the sides of her mane and down her back. The only bit that looks still scabby is the top of her tail, but this is drying up nicely and I am sure will soon be fine.

The interesting thing is that it also seems to act as a fly repellent. Flies and midges do not go near her, while her chesnut friend who can be standing right next to her has them buzzing everywhere around her. I will try putting some lotion on her as well, purely as a repellent.

The blurb on the bottle says:
Proven to prevent sweet itch when used before symptoms appear.
Treats and soothes inflamed areas.

It is described as a cutaneous liquid for treatment of the condition known as sweet itch in horses and ponies. You have to apply to all affected areas by rubbing in with fingers or a soft cloth (wear rubber gloves to protect against skin irritation) as soon as sweet itch is diagnosed and for the remaining part of the sweet itch season (March-September).
Initial application should be made twice daily, reducing to once daily and then 3-4 times a week as the irritation lessens.
All affected areas should be kept clean by shampooing and rinsing well at least once a week.. After shampooing or heavy exercise, re-apply to ensure adequate protection.
With horses that are known to suffer from sweet itch, it is recommended that Killitch is applied in the early spring before symptoms become evident, so that the condition may never take a hold.

It also says that you should not treat animals intended for human consumption. Thank goodness we do not do that here in spite of the European Union's fondness for horse meat!

It came in a bottle of 500 ml which lasted about a month.. As the condition responds to treatment you need to use less and less.

The active ingredient is shown as benzyl benzoate. I looked this up on the internet and it is shown as being a cure for scabies in humans. I hope I never have to find out!!!
