Advantages: Bombproof, it will take anything you throw at it and come back asking for more Disadvantages: Bit on the heavy side at 40lbs but its not really an uphill bike
I bought this bike about 3 months ago in the end of season sales for £2,000, the rrp on it was £2500. The bike is excellent, great build quality, super strong frame, takes so much abuse. The spec of the bike is superb as well, I've never seen a bike with such good components. The Marzocchi Roco rear shock is very plush and smooth through the whole travel range and still takes big hits. The Marzocchi 888 forks complement the rear shock well, they are soft in the first part of the travel but then ramp up to take the big hits. Sun Hill rims take everything you throw at them and the Shimano drive train and brakes are excellent, the shifting is crisp with no lag and the brakes will stop you on even the most vertical runs.
The one downside is the weight, it is so much effort to pedal it up hills but it is defiantly worth it to ride this ...
Advantages: Great fun, 'do anything' Disadvantages: Poor customer service
A Stinky was my first 'proper' downhill bike although not necessarily my first choice, I would much rather have had an Orange Patriot but the five month waiting list deterred me.
I wouldn?t say I regret having bought the Kona with its reasonable weight and specification, it certainly seemed to perform pretty well off-road. My Stinky is now a couple of years old and this is the model which I will review although I can say that the newer model does strike me as being of a much higher spec and better value for money.
So, I bought my Kona and the first thing I did was upgrade it from v-brakes to disk brakes (come as standard now) and the bike rode fantastically, especially once the Marzocchi forks had bedded in, no complaints whatsoever.
For the next few months the bike rode beautifully and I was more than happy, no problems ...

Advantages: Great handling, climbs like a mountain goat Disadvantages: Can be a handfull on rough, fast decents
in the butt to remind you that you're riding a hardtail. That said, I've ridden one with 2.3inch Kenda tyers on ,which really helped smooth the ride out. But there's no way you'll keep up with your fully sprung mates, riding a rocky downhill. That's not to say the experience isn't enjoyable, it is, it's just a little slower, and takes more finesse and concentration.
The first Kula I owned I rode around the succulent trails of Leith Hill in Surrey. Real Kona Kula territory. Smooth trails with lots of technical singletrack. Just the sort of place this bike was meant for.
Now I'm living in South Wales, where the trails are a lot rougher. Guss what, I bought a full suspention, the Kulas brother, The King. I still take the Kula out around Afan Argoed now and again, just to remind me what it's like to ride a "real bike", but I have to admit ...
