Advantages: Excellent performance in wet/muddy conditions, rim friendly, good wear rates Disadvantages: Pricier than the competition
...This review is for the dual compound cartridge pads. They are black/salmon in colour.
A bit of History
The real secret of the KoolStop's superior braking power is the salmon compound. Originally it was developed by Scott-Mathauser, and was recognised as the finest brake pads available, both for it's superior stopping power and durable compound. KoolStop was under contract to Scott-Mathauser to manufacture their pads.KoolStop obtained the rights to manufacture the salmon pads when Scott-Mathauser went out of business. The secret of the pads is that they contain iron oxide (i.e. rust), and work on the same principle as sintering does for disc brake pads. They dramatically improve wet weather braking performance as well as wear.

...I have used both of the salt lick holders in both my stables and I not too impressed with either of them.
The salt lick holder (not the grill) was easy to fit and screw onto the wall (my one stable was wooden so just needed an electric screwdriver and normal screws) which was a good start!! The salt lick I bought fitted in fine with no problems as the saddlers were unsure whether it was the right salt lick for the holder!
A few days passed and I noticed my horse had made an attempt of licking it but nothing too distastrous! After a few weeks I was mucking out the stable to see that the salt had begun to make the holder rust (I bought the metal holder) and the salt had started to crust around the bottom of the holder. Not a good sign! I immediately took it out the holder and got my partner to unscrew the holder and take it down.
In my...

Advantages: Excellent lever feel, stopping power, durability Disadvantages: when they squeel, they REALLY squeel
...- Afan, Coed-y-Brenin, 7Stanes, Lake District and Fort William - and they keep coming back for more. Pad wear has been amazingly light (I am not a light rider!) and the system has performed flawlessly from new. Brake squeel is intermittent and avoidable by routine maintenance and servicing is a doddle. Bleeding the system is something I used to dread on the Hopes...but not on these. Take time to learn how to do it and it's as easy as falling off a bike (sorry, couldn't resist!).
Stopping power never seems to fade even on the longest descents. Only once have I had to brake harder at the bottom of a descent due to fade and this was trying out the Fort William downhill track...so hardly surprising! Even now, the feel and positive feedback you get from the brakes in all conditions defies logic and impresses me on every ride.
If I...

I previously carried a small USB key on my keyring as my portable memory solution. But I found that more and more, I was having to transfer information from either a PDA or digital camera, and a USB key just didn't work for this.
So I found the... more
I've heard (and our staff has written) that these guys rock a lot live, which is freaking awesome. What I do know is that I have been waiting for this quite possibly all summer; the first CD by a band who knows how to do vocal melodies and quick, simple... more
