It is a D-Lock, which means that it is D shaped, obviously. It consists of a big u shaped metal tube coated in tough black plastic padlock that fits securely onto the lock.

You can also attach a chain to secure the front wheel as well. Again the instructions show this very clearly.

The best was to secure your bike is to find a suitable post or cycle stand. Then feed the lock through the rear wheel and the frame, this secures the rear wheel as well as the bike frame, the instructions are quite clear anyway. You can also attach a chain to secure the front wheel as well. Again the instructions show this very clearly.

The lock itself has yet another great feature in that the padlock used a rather strange looking key. The mechanism works using ball bearings rather than a barrel which makes it virtually impossible to pick, yet more piece of mind.
On top of being an astounding lock it also doubles as a defence mechanism, against motorists, just let it hang from your belt on the right hand side (in the UK, left hand side almost everywhere else), and motorists start giving you more road space. Something to do with a big chunk of metal possibly doing more damage to their precious box than a soft cyclist, possibly?
For some strange reason the guarantee on the lock excludes New Jersey, so I am glad that I don't live there. Why this is I do not know, could someone from that side of the Atlantic enlighten us.
I think that it is a great lock. You should still ask your local cycle shop for advice on buying a lock for your bike, as the choice of lock for your bike depends upon many factors (i.e. value of your cycle, where you are parking it, type of cycle, how much your are willing to pay)
(a lot more subdued this morning due to copious amounts of whisky last night)
the new york bike lock is undountably the best in the market. I have for years been quite a keen bike rider but regretfully a year ago i had my bike nicked while at the swimming pool. the reason it was stolen was because i was using a chain locka and not a u-bar lock like the excellent new york lock.
for a test i even tried to saw through it witha hacksaw but it took such a long time to make even a scratch so i gave up. i would definately recommend ...
