The laser is a boat for everyone, and for every oppotunity. Here are a few tips to consider when buying a new laser. When looking for a new boat, you want something...
L longlasting - you down want to be forking out large sums of money on a regular occasion. With the laser it is just the one payment and then enjoyment; this is mainly due to the fact that it is a one design fleet. You cannot go out and buy equipment that wil give you an unfair advantage, as it all has to be the same. The laser therefore provides racing that brings out the talent rather than just those sailors who are loaded.
A adaptable - the laser comes with 3 different rig sizes, which will cater for both differing abilities and differing conditions. The hull however is the same. To change the sail size all you need is firstly the sail, and secondly the lower half of the mast. Thus making it very versatile and very quick to change the rig to suit the sailor.
S singlehanded - it makes you feel really independant, and you come away after a sail feeling really good about yourself. No one else can share the credit, or in some cases defeat; but it sets you targets, and when you beat them the feeling you get is undescribable.
E epidemic - once started it is is the most catching thing around. Forget the flu, this spreads 10 times as fast. Only start if you have the time to comit yourself to the sport, or everything else will start to suffer, as you just can't keep away from you laser.
R reliable - you don't want a boat that will break down on you whilst out on the water on a cold winters day, you want a strong well built boat. The laser requires very little maintainance, yet really falls fault to damage.
I have raced my laser for the past 3 years, and have never looked back. There is a large laser fleet through out the world, providing good fleet racing very regulary; but if it's just a potter around on the lakes, this is still the boat for you. The laser is easy to maintain, has minimal running costs when started, and provides fun and enjoyment for all abilities or family members.
You could probably pick up a middle of the range laser for about £600-£700 pounds, compared to a new XD laser which could set you back nearer 3 grand. You do however have to remember that there are usually dinghy park of membership fees for the place where you will store your boat. These are not normally too expensive, but should be considere before commiting yourself to buying a new laser.
