Last week I walked the 80 mile Great Glen Way across Scotland from Fort William in the west to Inverness in the east. The walk is mainly flat although I\'d say about 25% of it is up and down some fairly big hills. I had never used walking poles before last week and seeing as I had not walked a long distance walk for nearly 10 years I thought I would give these particular pair a go, given they had such a good review from Miskah.
Well I\'m very happy to say they were outstanding and I cannot recommend them highly enough to other long distance walkers - this is what I did on the way last week in fact to quite a number of non-walking pole walkers !
After the 5 day walk I was expecting to come home with a limp and a bit of difficulty walking for several days after - well that just has not happened as the poles have reduced the forces on my legs especially on downhill parts. My arms are now stronger and I am now feeling as fit as I did 10 years ago thanks to the full 5 day body work out.
I did miss the little rubber tips on road sections - but have since gone out and bought them - the poles are fine on road surfaces that said, they\'re just a bit noisy and I think the rubber tips will reduce the impact even more than the in-built anti-shock system presently does.
I would say it took me 2-3 hours to get used to using the poles - it\'s a bit like swimming, for a while you struggle and don\'t get very far and feel like giving up but then suddenly it all clicks into place and you are literally motoring along - the feeling on flat and uphill terrain is like being pushed along by a strong wind or an invisible hand ! Going downhill the poles don\'t speed you up but instead they share the impact of each foot fall - hence my lack of leg pain as I explained earlier.
I would suggest standing in front of a mirror when you first purchase your poles and adjust one pole such that when you hold it your lower arm is horizontal - without a mirror you really can\'t see if the lower arm is horizontal or not and I discovered this fact after a couple of days then I did the mirror check and found I had them set 5cm too short. The subsequent adjustment made a difference and I felt I didn\'t need to thrust down quite so much - it all felt right.
So to summarize a great review from Miskah and a great product from Leki
