Advantages: An easy to use, heavy duty aid to personal fitness and well being Disadvantages: Initially costly but otherwise none
...About a year ago I purchased the second piece of equipment for our home gym. Now that I have became comfortable with it in actual use, I can perhaps give a fair appraisal.
The Background
I have a busy life style (who doesn’t these days). I am aware – acutely as often as not – that desk based office work, staring at a computer screen for many hours, day in, day out is not conducive to long term fitness. I had noted the sense of breathlessness, taking increasingly longer to subside after a hurried walk up a hill or a dash up two or three flights of stairs. The leisure hours are always at a premium and while I do not smoke or eat a heavily fat laden diet, the appreciation of a good concert or an Estate Bottled 1997 is not the most athletic of pursuits.
In the past I have held membership of a gym. The prime aim was always...

Advantages: The best facilities I have ever seen Disadvantages: Expensive and elitist
...seen quite a few in Milton Keynes, as I was seriously considering joining one. There are approximately 30 jogging machines spaced all along one wall. Some are situated in front of a mirror so that you can watch your technique (or fat wobble!), and some are positioned so that you can watch a TV screen. There are also the usual weight machines, such as for leg and arm curls, bench press, pecs, etc. There is a separate section for stretching and using the many ab machines, and then there are my favourite sort of machine. They have a whole set of electronic machines that test your strength and then adjust the programme...

Advantages: Good classes, excellent customer service Disadvantages: No pool
...Aerobics. There are both daytime and evening classes. I've very rarely had a problem booking in for a class. They usually only get full after New Years when all the resolutions start again!
I've tried out the Yoga, BodyBalance and LBT (Legs, Bums, Tums) classes, all of which are excellent and run by well trained staff. I hurt my back recently and the instructor made sure that I didn't do any moves that weren't suitable and reccomended other excersises for me to try that might help.
The Spin (mad cycling) class looks very scarey and the Latino Aerobics looks great fun, but I have 2 left feet! Rather than go through what each class entails I'd reccomend you look at the Les Mills website http://www.lesmills.com/ which describes them.
The one downside to the fact the club is so small is that the spin bikes in the Gloucester Peak Fitness...
